Valet Key Question

I got my car used and all I got is a key and a remote. I had my key duplicated at my local dealer ($25) and bought an additional remote at eBay ($18). The master is the black key right because that's the one that I have? (I have an Ody and the valet key is grey) I can probably try it tomorrow if it can lock/unlock the glove compartment. Just need to know if I can duplicate a valet key using the master?

Valet KEYS will not open the glove compartment.

That is why its called a valet key....so they cant get into stuff that is locked.

......or the trunk. Valet keys only open the door and start the car.

That is why you can turn off the trunk release in the glove compartment and lock the ski hole.

CORRECTION!!!

"The valet key works only in the ingnition and the door locks. You can keep the trunk pass-throught cover, and glove box locked when you leave your car and the valet key at a parking facilit."

"These keys contain electronic circuits that are activated by the Immobilizer System. They will not work to work to start the engine if the circuits are damaged."

Taken from my TL 2002 Owner's Manual.

So there is a chip in the keys, That means dont treat them let crap and dont get them WET.

check your manual to learn more about the Immobilizer System page 77.

tappy is very correct. almost all cars these days have a chip inserted into the keys for security reasons. this started in 2004 for japanese and american cars. euros had this feature in most of their cars for years now.

even my loaner honda accord had this feature in the keys.

oyeah, even my 99TL has this, so when i got my key copied at a hardware store, it didnt open the doors, trunk, and did not start ignition. only until i brought it to dealer and got it programmed it started to work.

I just had my master key duplicated at WalMart. The old guy who did it wasn't suppose to because it has a chip in it. Store policy is not to duplicate keys with chips in them 'cause they might damage the circuits. The girls working with him pointed it out and said that the key probably wont work. I told her that the key was not for starting the car it is just for opening the door. My actual spare key is hidden somewhere in the car I just had the duplicate made so that I could hide it somewhere on the outside of the car.

It seems nobody has answered my original question. How can I make a duplicate valet key if I only have the master?

go to the dealer with your master and your Key number plate(it comes it your original keys and has a programing code and serial number)

I'm pretty sure the dealer can make you a valet key.

or just go to the dealer with the vin number and i bet they can make whatever you want. Matter of fact I just called the dealer and said i had lost my valet key. he said bring the vin number and 2 forms of id and they would make me whatever i wanted while i waited. problem solved.

I asked how much it would cost but he didnt say and i forgot to ask again. im sure it isnt but about 30 or so dollars.

I keep my spare key under the driver's rear floor mat, and simply leave the doors unlocked.
