Transmission Problems
My 2002 TLs is having problems with 3rd gear. Shuttering down to 3rd at 35-40mph and just tonight going from 2nd to 3rd did not happen, just a bunch of noise and tacking 3200rpm AT 30MPH!!! All is sporatic. I am unable to make this recurr with any consentancy. Dealer says they need to drive the car to see what is going on. Just how long will they need the car? No codes showing up yet. What are the KEY words to have something DONE NOW before diaster happens??? ........

I think the dealers are fairly well versed in transmission difficulties at this point. Take it in and tell them what has occurred. They will have it for 3-7 days and put a new/rebuilt unit in. I'm sure the wrenches at the dealerships are getting good, (well at least better) at R&R of TL tranies. You should also notice the shudder at low speeds. Get on a deserted road and take off from a stop, accelerate slowly, feel the diference between 2nd and 3rd. Also down shifts, get the car in 4th and then slow down enough that when you accelerate gentley it ****s down into 3rd. You will also notice the shudder. By this time the fluid shoud be burnt or at least showing some color from particulate matter that was formerly your third gear cluch pack. My trans had these symptoms. And at one point it would occasionally shift very hard into 3rd and a clutch chatter or shudder when shifting into third. Catistrophic failure appeared certain if I ignored it. Take it in!
