Transmission
Hello, i just recently purchased a 99TL with 37k miles on it. looking through all the posts here i notied a lot of talk about bad transmissions, and about acura warranties covering and not convering the trannies. can anyone give me a rundown of what exactly is going on?

Not to scare you but a few 99 TL's have been affected too. But the majority is with 2000+ TL and TL-S.
The bad news is that Acura will NOT extend the 99 TL's warranty on the tranny, only for the 2000+ models. To make you feel any better, I have close to 70K miles on my 99 TL and it is still running great.

Naw, I've got 70K on my 99, and it runs just like a new one! I love it! I just pamper it though, like when its in park, and I put it in reverse, I wait until a second after I feel it go into gear until I give it some gas, and same when I'm going forward. I also do not use SS a lot:
A. Because I like to save on gas by not reving so much
B. Cause I dont want to destroy my tranny!
Enjoy your vehicle! Its one of the best!

I should point out that revving does not necessarily equate to higher gas mileage. In fact, in many instances, you can get better gas mileage using either the SS or shifting down the gearbox to increase the revs.
A good example of this is common uphill driving. If you're in D5 and press harder on the gas to maintain your speed uphill, you may or may not downshift to fourth but regardless you're foot is down further to the floor. However, if you were to drop it in D4 at the base of the hill, you may actually be able to decrease gas flow or maintain the same amount as you're climbing. Your revs are higher putting less work on the car to pull itself up the hill.
Because of this, many cruise control systems do a poor job keeping your mileage up when you're on hilly driving b/c they're too late to downshift.
I'm at 66K on my 01 TL-p...no problems...ever....just the routine services. I use the SS quite a bit actually.....I don't feel I'm lucky though, I feel like I'm in the 90+% of owners who have a car that works. I love it! Let's hope it stays that way.

My 99 tl has 81K on it and the tranny has been flawless so far. Also, I use the hell out of the SS, so I don't know if not using it will make the tranny last longer. Might as well have fun!!
