Trans Questions
Hello everyone,
I just purchased a 2002 TL with 54k on it. I had read the honda/acura press release before purchasing the vehicle. Unfortunately I had not been here so I did not know how widespread the transmission problems were. I have a few questions.
1. How many members on this board have not had any transmission problems at all? And if you haven't had any problems how long have you owned the car?
2. What can I do to prevent my car from losing a transmission? My car seems just fine right now, but I've put all of 200 miles on it.
Thanks for your help

the vast majority have 0 problems. but of course the only ones that post are the ones with problems. Obviously the problem isnt that widespread or Honda would be out of business. BTW I have 82k on my original one.
Make sure your fluid has been changed. Really isnt any preventitive maintenance you can do, but you are covered for 7 years or 100k on the tranny, so dont worry too much.

Not many report the transmission problem. Many on this site do not have this issue, however, that still doesn't really answer your question. It's really a crap shoot, it may happen to you it may not. Things you can do to help yourself, change your transmission oil at the appropiate times. Get the oil jet kit installed. If your transmission is on it's way out, you really can not do anything to stop it.
There are two types of tranny issues 1) 2 gear not getting enough oil (OIL JET KIT corrects this. 2) 3rd gear issues, this has not been indentifid as an Acura issue, however, should this happen your tranny is gone. Remember you have a 100,000 mile warranty on your tranny (yes, even though you bought your TL used.)
Good Luck and don't worry, enjoy your TL... It's a great car! Welcome to the board!

I wasnt really sure where to post this , but i just bought an 03 TL with 60K miles, i have had it about 2 weeks now and everything has been good, i love it, but just today after getting home and taking it out, the tranny is shiffting really bad, it shifts extremely hard, and late, and isnt very responsive, and it doesnt seem to be choosing the right gears to drive in while it Auto. Now, when i got home i planned on filling it up with gas for the first time, i was going to put in the suggested 91 octane, but my mother took it out while i was gone for the weekend and filled the car up with 87 octane, Could this bee the problem, all was fine and i havent done anything to the car to make the tranny go. Any suggestions/ advice

The gas wont make it do what the trans failures do before they die
New members should proceed directly to www.acura.com
click on ownership experience and register your car by VIN number
That knows all the current repair issues/warranties
You should see oil jet recall Fixed- that means the last person took care of it-
if open THEN TAKE TO DEALER-
It also list the trans failure signs
The info box should also say trans extended warranty OPEN
thats good- you are covered in event of failure
commonly occurs between 65 and 105 thousand miles
