Tranny Question??
I've been on Azine a little while now and I was wondering is the tranny issue a question of when it will happen or if it will happen? Is it possible that Acura actually made a few that will last? I'm @ 137,000 & I'm constantly wondering if its gonna go on me. I haven't had any trouble whatsoever, its just I know they are crap!!

there have been a few to make it well over 170k (not a whole lot of owners that have reached that mark here) but for most its a matter of when. Not to jinx you but with the mileage you are at you are doing well.

The OP just jinxed himself..
In the 9 years I have been on A-Zine I have seen it MANY time when someone says there tranny has outlasted all, and a week or two later the CEL light comes on and the car starts downshifting on its own..Watch your back!

I'm running that experiment right now. The original 4-speed transmission in my 99 TL made it to 173,000 miles. The rebuild, installed by Acura, has carried the car to 240,000 miles. So 67,000 miles and counting on the rebuild.

I'm not superstitious, (think I spelled that right) I was really just wandering if Acura made some terrible trannys and some good ones. How can a company make such a nice car w/ such poor quality transmissions? Oh well, I still enjoy driving my TL and I'll continue until that day.

I had no warning at all. 96000 on mine and on my way home one day the cel came on. I pulled the code and it was the P0740. Next day went to drive it to the dealer and she started having problems shifting then a couple more miles started downshifting. From no problems to barely making it to the dealer in a matter of miles. Now they want 5000 grand with a pcm. It Sucks

ac- why are they denying you any warranty help-
usually the tips offered here in the main Tranny Failure thread will get at least partial GOODWILL Coverage, it may take phone calls or mailed letters to corp but help is there--``help not valid on salvage title cars``
TV- not all the trans fail or it would be recall issue
A small percentage of them will fail of all the hundreds of thousands of them made,
its bad oil flow to the clutch packs allows heat buildup and extra wear of some critical parts, there is no permanent fix beyond the post 2005 case design change with better oiling paths
you could ask other TL owners you see in a parking lot and they will never have heard of any trans problems and are well past 100 on theirs
This being a major tech forum, you find members who had a problem of some type~
The 4 speed of 99 and earlier was a solid trans will few issues
then they jammed a 5th gearset in where there was not enough room
Blame the engineers versus the cost cutting dept and see what you get for any car~
New cars have even worse trans probs- but look how many have a similar type trans with paddle shifters on the steering wheel
Why does acura use different trans in different cars- you got me on that one!

I have read the tips on here and they were very helpful. My car is at acura as we speak. They are giving me a hard time because i didn't buy my car from them and didn't service it with them. I have called and talked to the service manager who said it was out of his hands. So i called the number posted on this site x 5 forgot what they call it. They assigned me a case number adn i talked to a case manger. He is suppose to call me back Monday night. The only thing i have going for me is i had 1987 accord that lasted forever with no problems. (it was a tank) This is the main reason i bought this car.

By the way you are right about people not hearing of the problems. By reading on this site you get the impression it is a lot more common then it is. I called some transmission shops in baltimore just to get prices and they said they don't see a large amount of 2g acuras and haven't heard much of these problems. Of course the service manager and writer seemed very aware

AC- so Im guessing they said you are `out of vin range`?
where you bought the car has NO relation to acuras warranty dept covering the problem- its acura corp paying the bill, but they pay less than retail- so the dealer doesnt get the markup $$$
Your dealer wants money and appearently doesnt know you belong to acurazine and can give out name of place etc~
what is the shops name and location?
If you are really young they may try bs, but dont take it
corp will come thru for you, mention azine to them
Trans shops dont see many of us due to the trans extended warranty 7+9/109 , but the dealer sees an average 1-4 gen2 per WEEK with failed trans so this is no surprise that yours went out
Acura is well aware the vin cutoff had no relation to a fix- it was soley to close the court case, so acura has the `GOODWILL policy` for those past vin cutoff
Like I said before- you may have to fight for it a bit, but playing nice and tell them how brand loyal you are really does help
Best of Luck to you in a $300-800 settlement that includes 3/36

Yes out of vin range. Mine is a late 2003. They are giving me a hard time with good will due to not buying the car from acura.(the dealer that is) Its frankel acura in Baltimore and i'm 25, so i guess i'm young. Trust me i'm not giving up. Waiting on Acura corp to call the dealer. I am suppose to get a call back tomorrow night.
Yea i guess your right about the trans shop and warranty. Like i said acura is familiar with the problem. I hope they come through i cant afford 5000, expecially this close to christmas.
Do you guys know if its true that all 2003 need the pcm shipped with the transmission? Thats an extra 890 the dealer wants.

I just had my trans rebuilt by a private shop in aug so I dont have a ton of miles on it yet. The first owner had the trans rebuilt in 05 and after looking at the old paperwork I see the last rebuild lasted 65k miles then unfortunately it was my turn to rebuilt. My car is at 170k+ miles right now and I hope this rebuild can make it far beyong the 60k+~ish mile mark this time. I've noticed that the trans seems to shift better and when ever I happen to pass the 100mph mark it doesn't clunk anymore. Before my rebuild it would clunk when going pass the 100mph mark on the dash. It was very annoying. I believe it was like that since I first had the car but I have no way of knowing since I dont really go over 100mph. Is there any way to tell the quality of the rebuilds simply by how the car drives?
