Tranny Question?
My TLS is one of the first production ones, bought in 3/01, and I haven't gotten any problems with my tranny, will it eventually happen down the road or am I just one of the lucky ones? What should I look for that may indicate a possible problem with the transmission?

Satinsilver .. I think I got mine about a week before/after you did. How many miles on yours so far? I have 14,000.
Harder, rougher shifts, shift "flares (engine revs another 750 rpms or so b/w shifts under moderate throttle)," grinding (in the excessive cases...)
best of luck

mine has about 22,000 miles. I do feel a rough shift from first to second, is that normal? Also when I turn off the ignition I hear a grinding sound when the engine is shutting off is that normal also?

Help a "Newbie"
I just purchased a new 2003 TL-S with nav system about 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately, I found this forum and discovered the transmission problems after buying the car. Have there been any reported failures on the 2003's? Have any changes (improvements, hopefully) been made on the 2003 transmissions?

It seems that regardless of whether or not your tranny's been giving you problems, the best bet is to change the fluid often .. maybe every 15K miles?? That's definitely what I'll be doing as soon as I get the current one fixed/replaced.
How rough is your 1st-->2nd shift? Does it "shake" the car when you shift, or are you talking about a rough shift under full throttle?
Don't know too much about the 2003's .. I think I read something about someone w/ the '03 that had to replace their tranny about 1000 miles after receiving it.
Trust me, had I know about the tranny issue, I would have thought longer and harder about buying the TL-s

i knew all about the tranny problems and i STILL decided to buy this car, as have a few others. i have read a few of you saying that even with the failures, you would still keep your car, and that says a hell of a lot to me.....
i'll just keep my fingers crossed, and hope that the issue is resolved before my waranty runs out in 4 years
