^^ True, but many of the fluids that are recommended for our transmission, even the ones from Castrol, Valvoline MaxLife work better than the Z1 does in these transmissions. IMHO, as many failures they are with the fluid heat is the killer, and the better fluid you have, the better off you will be.

I've been using castrol high mileage atf with great results. Tranny is shifting much smoother and shift flare is nearly gone. Don't waste your money on Z-1, if it was so fantastic all our transmissions wouldn't be blowing up. I did a 1x3 the first time to see how the tranny would react, after good results a did a second 1x3. I can actually enjoy the car again best 30 bucks I've spent in a long time.

There are 2 reasons why you get the 3rd gear shudder and failures.

The crappy factory Z1 fluid loaded with friction modifiers.

The 3rd and 4th gear pressure switches that electronically degrade over time.

You can run any ATF in the Honda auto and mix all you want. It will not hurt a thing. ATFs are more similar than different.

What you need to do is use the farthest thing from the Z1 which is Type F fluid which has no FM. Any Type-F will do but I use the synthetic Redline Racing version. You will not believe how good it shifts after this.

The switches need to be replaced every 50,000 miles or 3 years. Time seems to be as important as mileage. There is no cleaning, the pressure disk goes bad and they go out of range so new ones are a must.

These two things will entirely eliminate 3rd gear failures and shudder in any gear.

I have a 2000 tl with 85k miles. I noticed a slippage in 2nd - 3rd gear. I did the recall 3- 4 years ago and they said my tranny was fine and they installed that external oil kit. Being ten years old that extended warranty probably wont apply any longer. What can I do to save the tranny - it only slipped twice so far?
