honda atf Z-1! tranny flush or fluid change?
4 quarts vs. 13! and yes i just changed my tranny fluid today, after a full flush 3,000 miles ago, and it was nasty! IMHO, from what i've seen, you should change your tranny fluid when you change your oil, and i do that every 3,000 miles with redline synthetic 10w30, that's supposed to be good for 7500 miles, and it was nasty too! HEAT KILLS!!! some might say that overly frequent fluid changes might be overkill, but with our cars modded, and run hard! i prefer to be proactive and keep everything clean! i think that's a good approach to taking care of your baby, better safe than sorry! There were guys that changed fluid regularly (at 10,000 mile intervals) and their trannies still failed. Although in a normally functioning tranny, changing fluid will help prolong its life, this has *not* been proven to be the case with the Acura tranny failures.
Case in point, I checked my fluid at 24,000 and it was nice and pink--no funny color or odor and it blotted nice on a paper towel. I was planning on changing my fluid at 30,000 miles, which is still at *half* of the manufacturer's recommended change interval of 60,000 miles (which is normal for most AT's today). My tranny started slipping shortly thereafter and at 24,750 miles, the fluid was dark brown/black, had a burnt smell and would not blot into a paper towel. Tranny was replaced less than 200 miles later. So my fluid went from fine to crap in 750 miles. Even if I had just changed it at 24,000 miles, it wouldn't have made a difference.
Save your money--changing it more often than 30,000 miles (unless you're towing constantly) is overkill. If your tranny is going to go, it's going to go.

its pretty simple:
1. drain old fluid; drainage bolt is on drivers side
2. fill up w/ 2 qts.; this bolt is marked ATF (i couldnt get it off, so i filled it via the dipstick opening =P )
3. drive it around for a few mins in every gear
4. repeat process 2 more times (after this uve used up 6 qts)
5. drain it one last time, clean off the magnetic bolt, replace the washer on it, and then fill it up w/ the last 3 qts.

Funny . . that what I just did, mosty, except that I did 3qts per flush, six qts total.
I noticed that after adding the 3qts the fluid was still a reddish-brown, but after the 2nd drain the fluild looked fairly close to new.
I decided to do it this way because the dealer was going to charge about $60 (TT&L) just to do a basic drain. They don't do flushes and I didn't trust a shop that does full flushes because who knows what fluids might end up in your tranny.
Anyway, it took a little more time, but I think it was worth it.
BTW - I have almost 15,000 miles and the fluid was already fairly dark, and there was a fair amount of trash on the bolt.
