tranny failure issue and Acura service

I encourage everyone to give Acura Service a call at 800-382-2238 and ask them about the current issue of transmission failure on CL/TL models as well as what currently being done to correct this issue, any intention to extend warranty on a known defective part, has this issue been reported to BBB or NHTSA etc..
You will be surprise..I assure you.

I am not worrying milage problem on my car, but close to the fourth year, sure as hell, I'm going to kill my damn tranny one way or another and get a replacement before the warranty expires. Talking to Acura is just pissing me off.

How do you kill a tranny in a shortest amount of time? Drain all fluid out, drive the piss out of it, when it dies, open the filler bolt and put fresh fluid in, call roadside assistance to get your car tolled in for service....Hello new tranny.

Yes, a crook on the work, but this sh*t wouldn't have happen if Acura does the job right.

Called today, they said its a ISOLATED problem, not all the cl's and tl's seem to have any issues. But they will document any complaints so if you do go out of warranty Acura might cover it for you if it goes bad.

I think that is a good point that anyone with a tranny failure should make sure to do. Maybe all of you have already

I have called as well...they couldn't be more disinterested. In fact, they acted surprised that such a thing even happened. My question is what do they mean by 'isolated'...it is obvious from the posts on this board that it is not specific to a certain run of production numbers...especially since it has shown up in the '03.

My dealer says the failures are because of a bad 'carrier bearing'...he could not answer whether or not that the transmissions which have been built with the bad bearing have been identified, and if the corrected tranny has now gone into production for installation...it would seem to me that if a problem were identified, this would immediately be put into production, and any already built trannies awaiting installation would be pulled for correction of the problem...but, this does not seem to be the case. I am awaiting a call from the Acura Rep who was on 'vacation' last week. They must all get the same week off.

Angry Going to the BBB for Trany problem

Hey ladies and gents;

I know this has been asked for before, but could any and everyone who has had a problem with their transmision and acura's lack of customer service for the problem. PLease reponde to this post ASAP. Let me know how many times the problem has occured and what has acura said to you. I'm going to the BBB on the 23rd of April and I would LOVE to show them that there is a mayor problem with this transmisions. This will also help any of you that are thinking of going through the Lemon Law. Acura(honda) made it sound to BBB that it is an isolated problem. I don't know about the rest of you but I'm sick of this people giving me the round around and I think its time for acura to addrese this problem, tomorow it could be one of you. I have had my trany replaced once and its doing it againg.

Hey 2fast go here:

http://www.acura-tl.com/forum/showth...threadid=30872

It's oblio98's thread tracking the tranny failures on this site.

You can tell the BBB that has been about a 3-6 week waiting list for transimissions since early November. That hardly seems like an isolated problem. When I had my tranny replaced for the SECOND time in December, I had to wait for 4 weeks. I was told I was 30th on a nationwide waiting list. Others had been waiting for 6 weeks around that same time. I think there is still about a 3 weeks wait.

Talked to the Acura Rep today...talk about attitude. I was in a conference call with the Rep and the Business Manager from the Dealer. I have had my tranny replaced and was interested in additional compensation. We discussed this forum, and the comment was made that you can't believe everything you read on the Internet...people embellish their stories...they make things up...they aren't telling the truth. One guy said someone brought him a prinout of an RSX forum and it was full of lies.

So, they basically were calling me a liar. For my trouble, I got nothing. They also said having the tranny replaced does not devalue the car...etc...they could even tell me if the problem had been correct in the new TL-S. Basically they said the transmission 'is very complex'...so I guess that justifies why they go bad.

I was told that they hadn't heard of any problems.

They also clarified the warranty issue. If you have one go bad right before your warranty is out, the replaced part itself has as 12,000/1yr warranty.

I wasn't too happy with the lack of information they provided.

so the fact that they have trannies on back order all over the place is a lie?

I noticed a little stutter the other day in my car when I was accelerating after slowing down. It was during a downshift and it was extremely minor, but with all of the talk on this board, I called my dealer. I have an '01 TL.

The service manager acknowledged that there have been "a few" problems. In all cases the symptoms are of slipping and a loud clunk on an upshift. As for the cause, he said the following: "it usually is only one component in the transmission (vs. a total failure). As far as Acura is concerned, they feel it is cheaper for them to just ship us a new transmission and swap it out instead of tearing it apart and trying to diagnose the problem.

When I asked him about preventative care, he just recommended changing the oil every 15K miles.

I then asked him if he noticed a particular model year that was worse than others. He said that his experience was primarily with '99 and '00 model years. He hadn't seen any '01s or '02s.

That seems to conflict with the experience of a few of you on this board, at least with respect to the '02s.

Just figure I'd pass along what I was told.

Garylee 55,
I also have a 02 TL-S that I purchased from Acura Carland in Duluth. I would like to hear from you on your issues with your car and the dealer you went to.
I took delivery on mine the last week in November 01 and with about 1500-2000 miles I was experiencing a few transmission glitches. I was hesitant to take the car back to the dealership for the 3750 mile check up knowing what goes on in a shop.
I am an ex master mechanic and worked on Mercedes, BMW's, and a numerous European automobiles including Japanese.
I figured that I would have the oil changed and have the dealership make note of the problems that I was having.
I didn't want any problems with warranty work just in case, so I wanted it documented. The navigation system has a pixel burned out and that will have to be replace. Needless to say when I got the car back the underside subframe was dented from the car not being put on the rack correctly and the under side of the drivers door was nicked when they tried to open the door with the lift stuck out. It wasn't until I got home before I found this and the next day I was on the phone with the service mgr. I won't go in detail but we had several words. I told him if the transmission had to be replaced that I would be there and would check every torque on every bolt that was removed including brackets and anything else that required removal. I stated that if I found one problem I would be his worst nightmare. Never in my life would I have thought that a $30,000 dollar plus car would need a transmission that soon, if at all. I can definitely feel for all the members here with transmission problems. Needless to say I am not getting the joke here especially when Acura is not living up to there reputation. I am approaching 10,000 miles on the car and it acts up several times a week. It's just a mater of time!!!!!!!!

This almost makes me as mad as the morons who infer that the driver and their driving habits cause the tranny failures.

I am starting to think that the extra power of the TL-S is too much for the tranny. It seems odd that of the 29 2002 TLs in our post, all of them are TL-Ss, and the 2 2003 TLs that had their tranny die were both TL-Ss. H-m-m-m-m.

Why no TL-Ps?

Any comments?

I've counted 40 TL-S cars with failed tranny with this thread. Starting on 12/20/01, oblio98 was the first I counted. Includes a couple '03s and several from different threads than oblio98's. Repeat offenders were only counted once.

Feb 01 build date, 23k tranny still ok

Hey guys! UPDATE!!! I was driving down the interstate last night in rush hour traffic and my new tranny started slipping out of 5th gear!!! Didn't even get 400 miles on the re-manufactured transmission! How do you like that??? I call the Business Manager and told him he needs to get back on the phone to the Acura rep...all he could say was 'bring it in'. I will let you know what happens today.

another guess

- could it be possible that somehow by mistake they are putting TL-P trannies into TL-Ses? Or parts that are supposed to go into TL-P trannies are going to TL-S trannies? I can see how a glitch in the computer that controls the parts supplies could do something like this.

The best explanation I could get was 'this transmission is very complex'...and, I said...'Evidently...'

What a lame excuse they give

It is obvious that Acura knows of the problem, hasn't fixed the problem, and continues to hide and downplay it.

Here's hoping you get your ride back and can enjoy it like you deserve to!

I don't believe they replaced the tranny at all! I bet they just dropped it and modified it per new specs, then slammed it back in...they were on 23 days for paying for a rental, and the tranny orders are probably backlogged.

In any case, they are on their way to pick it up as I type this.

My understanding is both the cars have the same tranny.
