OK...So I pick up my car yesterday at the dealer after having an oil change. When I dropped it off, I supplied them with box of 6 Mobil 1 quarts (one of the quarts was a partial leftover from a prior oil change, so it totaled a little more than 5 and a half) and a Mobil one filter. After leaving the dealer, I drove about 120 miles total yesterday for work and this morning I get around to checking my oil and I'm about 3/4 of an inch OVER the full mark.:wow:
So my 2 questions are (which you can probably guess) :
1. How much damage did I really do to my seals after driving that much with an extra quart in the engine?
2. What should I demand of the dealer? Tow it in? Guaranteed seal/gasket replacement in the future? Free oil changes for a year? A new engine?...OK, that last one is probaby a bit much
You know the funny thing is...after I paid, I went up to the tech and ask him where the leftover quart was and he told me that I only brought 4 full quarts and the one partial quart and that it filled it perfectly. So I've been screwed and lied to (starting to sound like my last relationship)
Any advice in this matter, would be greatly appreciated...
Steph

I would obviously drain the overfill.
If you overfill 2 things happen:
You will get bad mileage as there may be more resistance from moving parts like the crank shaft being submerged in oil.
It could froth-up and bubble but I think you'd see this on the dip stick.

i would just bring it back to the dealer and point it out to them. they will probably have to drain it and refill it.
What your problem is?

In additiona to that you could cause the oil pressure to increase which will weaken the gaskets or any other seals in question.Originally posted by Severin

I would drain the overfill like fsttyms1 suggested and tear the dealer a new one. I do my own oil changes, so I have not run into the problem you are having.
