TL Type S vs. Buick Regal GS (Acceleration)
I understand the Regal is not in the TL's league in terms of luxury and refinement. However, for me, acceleration is an important deciding factor.
Also, living in NYC, I'm limiting myself to automatic transmissions.
Does anyone know how the Regal GS (supercharged, 240 HP, 280 ft/lb torque) stacks up against the TLS in terms of straight acceleration?
Also, related comments on the automatic 2002 Altima and Maxima would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Michael

'02 Altima with 3.5L V6 should be pretty fast, too....
Regal GS/Grand Prix GTP should be pretty close to TLS.... TLS may edge out JUST a bit, but nothing spectacular.... but a simple pulley change should bump up the HP on GS/GTP....

Since the engine on GS/GTP is supercharged, the supercharger is belt-driven and pulley is the round "thing" that drives the belt.... I am not expert about mechanical parts either, but I think by changing the pulley, you can, in a way, alter the superchager and give you more HP(more boost??)....
Any GTP/GS owners wanna help me out here??
Chaing pulley is pretty straight forward, and you can always change it back to stock spec when the lease is up...

Under normal circumstances, the GTP is very hard to beat
I've spent lots of time running them at the track with my old Maxima (95 Automatic with all the bolt ons plus and ECU)
My old Maxima would run 15.1's @ 95-96 mph on 2.5 60' times. (traction was a huge problem for my car) There were guys with bone stock GTP's running 15.0-14.7. Those cars are explosive off the line, as they were pulling off 2.1 60' times without so much as even letting air out of the tires.
With practice, on still a stock car, I've witnessed them running 14.6's. Pretty quick, but their trap speeds are in the low 90 range (90-91 mph). But, if you race one past the 1/4 you stand a good chance to win. They have lots of low end, but the power tends to fall off on the high end.
Now, if the owner has chipped and done a pulley swap, the car is capable of high 13's-low 14's.

There are 2 or 3 of them at my local track that are running 13.6~13.8 with a smaller pulley and a chip. JimW is right, too, in that their trap speeds aren't that high... most of their power is low to midrange. If you catch [a modded one] on the highway you stand a much better chance.
Gotta love factory forced-induction.

I for one believe the Regal and TLS are almost identical in terms of acceleration. Like everyone has said, the regal gets most of it's power during low RPMs. One piece of advice...if you buy the regal, buy some new tires. The rubber that comes stock on the regal is nice, but it's not good at all for mashing the gas and launching off pavement. With all that torque, performance rubber is a must.
