Question TL-S or Audi A4 3.0

Allright so I need a new car in Sept 2001. Narrowed it down to the Acura TL-S or the new A4 Audi with 3.0 V6. First off need general opinions. And also as many people who have the TL Type S if you have 0-60. 0-100 and quarter numbers or any of those I would greatly appreicate that, as it would greatly help my decision. Also if I go with the TL type S, will it be easy to make it do upper 5's 0-60. Thanks, Anthony

Since you live in NY the quattro all wheel drive on the Audi, which is the best in the business, would be helpful during the winter. However the TL-S would probably be faster. I would consider looking at a current Audi S4. If you can find one still around in September you could probably get a pretty good deal on it. It has similiar if not better performance numbers then the TL-S.

TypeS won't hit 5's for 0-60 without mods.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I started a thread on the Audi A4 2.8 vs the TL S.
Some have pointed out that Audi has a problem with electronics.
Some say the Quattro is a waste.
I don't know about all that. I'm still researching but I'm getting closer to my decision. The price is right for the A4 2.8 with all the stuff I want.
I'm driving one this weekend and that will greatly help me in my decision. If the back seat is unbearably small, I'll probably sway back to the TL S.
Anyway, I can't wait til the day I Decide.

Look, the TL is great, but there is more to driving than 0-60 folks. The fact of the matter is that MAYBE you'll win by a hair at the stop light, but on the Road, because of the quattro, the TL will be left in the dust.

I was looking at A-4's also, but,
1. Too small
2. After adding leather, sunroof, auto (so the wife could drive also), cd, etc, the price was 33 - 34K. If I'm going to spend that much on a small car I'd rather get a 325 or 330.
3. New A4 looks much better and a bit larger.
4. Audi's do have a reputation for expensive maintenance and not too great reliability.
5. VW's get the same goodies as you in your A4. That would piss me off. At least there are many differences between the accord and TL.

I'd say the A6 is more comparable to a TL, but the A6 is in the 40K range.

Sorry, I just realized you meant the NEW A4. I haven't seen them in the sheet metal yet so I can't say. Also, I thought the new A4 would only come with the 1.8 turbo, not the 3.0 in the US.

I also thought that we are not going to have a 3.0 liter engine on the new A4 in the US right away - can anybody confirm that.

Not exactly. The TL will be as least as fast as the A4 quattro in the dry. The TL-S will even outrun the A4 quattro in the dry. But the A4 quattro will outrun the TL or TL-S in the wet or snow.
One of the members in www.audiworld.com posted a comparison test on a front wheel drive A4 versus a quattro A4. What he found out was that the advantage of 4wd (quattro) on dry road is almost negligible. The performance figures between the two cars, in the dry, are very close. However, it's a completely different story in wet conditions. The 4wd has a huge advantage over 2wd on slipper roads.
The advantage of 4wd on dry roads is offset by the extra weight and gear loss (driving two more wheels), unless accompanied by lots of torque and lots of horsepower.
S4, with 250hp, will leave the TL in dust. But definitely not the 1.8T nor the 2.8 quattro A4, nor even the to-be-released 3.0 quattro A4.

Go test drive the S4 (CD/leather 44k after 6% tax w/o nav) and TL Type S. However S4 might have a much longer wait than TLS.
