Lightbulb Tired of Charcole Stained Exhaust Tips?

I'm sure i speak for everyone when i say I'm tired of having a little bit of black deposit resting in the bottom of the exhaust tip. It devalues the car.. oh say.. $2000 dollars. Looks wise anyways . Ok, here's the solution! I was shocked at the results, hopefully it will work for you guys too. I usually rinse my car before I wash it, not sure if it matters. But I rinsed the tips quickly, then added some Meguire's "Hot Rims" rim cleaner to basically the whole tip and one or two sprays directly on the black areas. Now go sponge down your car. Okay, time to rinse. Rinse down your car, and then rinse off those tips with some prolonged pressure and, WOW! The tips can sparkle like they were knew! Give it a try and let me know if it works out for you. I'm sure any rim cleaner will do, but I was using Meguire's Hot Rims in this case. It really made the top of my spring time car care list. Next to clay barring that is .

good tip!!

What I've been doing is just washing them regularly with soap as I wash the car. Then, after it's dried and waxed I use a stainless steel cleaner (since I have the Comptechs) to clean the tips, the can, and inside the tips. I just rub the cleaner on, then rub it off.... looks like new!!

I may have to try your way though b/c it requires less polishing. I actually have the Black Magic rim cleaner which is basically the same thing, so I'll try that!!

I discovered this lil trick a while ago with Mother's Alloy Wheel cleaner. On tab on a rag will wipe away all the black stuff (brake dust?), rust, etc. Very little rubbing required, looks sparkly clean.

Good post. I didn't even know this was a problem - honestly. It must be because my first "wax" job was with Zaino. I included the rims and the exhaust tips in that treatment and both have been a cinch to clean since. I suppose any good wax/polymer coating will simplify that job. Now I'll be sure to reapply Zaino to these when the time comes.

Wow. I have never waxed my exhaust tips. I bought the car in November. I think the black stuff is soot from the rich mixture during VTEC. But anyway just spray a little Windex on any old cloth wipe the tip and it looks brand new just like day one.

One important thing to keep in mind when you spray the tips is to try not spray directly at the tip becuase if water gets inside the tips then you muffler will rust from the inside out since the water tends to evaporate very slowly inide since its enclosed. Wouldn't want to rust the insides of the muffler.

Hangman, water is actually a biproduct produced by your catalytic converter. Have you ever been up north during the winter (or a cold day over there in Houston) and seen water/steam coming out of the tail pipes? That's why car manufacturers have switched to stainless steel exhaust systems.

Don't worry about the rust thing. If it happens, it won't be a couple of squirts of windex that did it...

Hey thanks for the great responses! Let me know if it works out for you guys too. I forgot to mention you should rub the balck areas a little with a sponge before you rinse it. That should help. I'll have to wax my tips now to prevent this from happening again. Washing and caring for it is ALMOST as fun as driving it. Happy washing!

I'm beginning to like the black build up in my 3A Racing tips. It seems to help hide the skinny stock pipe when looking from behind Maybe I'll just clean the lip area so the edge stays nice and shiny
