tire sizing safety

is it safe to go down one tire size for my 3 season rubber?.the certain forces exerted between rim and bead is critical but how much tolerance is acceptable safety wise for the faster 9-10 speed limits posted on the roads and jolts to 100 or slightly more on the highway without my 2 small grand kids in the back.i need a little less rubber on the road when i hit those rain channel grooves on the highway because supposedly it will cut through the water better than wider one's do and not act as plows.can anyone help me out? and no i'm not talking 100 mph+ in the rain either ,in case yer wondering, lol! just under racing. thanks.

What size tires are you using now? The TLS standard is 215/50 R17 93V, the TL was 205/60 R16 91V.
If I remember correctly normally you can go up or down 1 or 2 sizes (obviously not in diameter). If your question can't get a definitive answer here I would call a tire store. You should try contacting tirerack.com and ask them what will fit on your rims.

FWIW, I went up in diameter, using SUMITOMO HTR ENHANCE LX2, 225/55 R17 97V SL BSW.

With the poor condition of I-90 and the excessive tire ruts from truck/vehicles and the typical PNW rain, it hasn't been an issue for me, even increasing the section with 0.4".

Current New Difference
Rev. / Mile: 792.2 754.2 -38
Section Width: 8.46'' 8.86'' 0.4''
Sidewall Height: 4.23'' 4.87'' 0.64''
Tire Circum: 79.98'' 84.01'' 4.03''
Tire Height: 25.46'' 26.74'' 1.28''
If your speedometer readsmph, you are going about 68.3 mph

Discount Tire has a nifty calculator you may want to try: https://www.discounttire.com/learn/tire-size-calculator

hey thanks for the reply..i know i;m going off subject a bit but what does 'FWIW' and' PNW rain' mean?also you went up in diameter,on a 2g tl?.tires aren't too big for the wells? i got my 215/60/16 studded snows on and they will rub a bit when i'm cutting the wheel all the way.

FWIW - for what it’s worth
PNW - pacific northwest (aka, Seattle region)

Yes, I did go up a size on my 2003 TL-S, on stock 17” rims and they fit fine. I like how they fill a bit more of the wheel well, vs looking like a covered wagon In My Opinion.
