I have mine tinted. When sitting inside, it doesn't make it much darker to look out of, but it cuts down on the glare (of the sun, or headlights) a lot. Also, it protects the interior, and adds security. Only cost me $80. I would recommend it.
As for legal, in Washington it is 70%, but I have mine 50%. No problems with the cops. If I did get pulled over, I would open the moonroof, or the passenger window to let in light, or turn on the map lights, so it didn't look like the windshield was tinted.
Hope this helps.

If you want to tint your windshield, you'd need to tint it at 70% or higher. 35% is way illegal....
(1) the front windshield of which is composed of, covered by or treated with any material which has a light transmittance of less than seventy percent unless such materials are limited to the uppermost six inches of the windshield;

Wow...Hold up avirex..before you listen to other members of this site, let me tell you the lowdown on tinting, because i just got kicked off my insurance policy for that same reason.
1.Its ILLEGAL in any state to have your WHOLE front windshield tinted..Yes, there are rules and regulations about percentage of the tint, but its all in regards to a front STRIP on top of the windshield, not the entire windshield..And some states, Florida included, have recently passed laws banning any type of tinting on the front windshield (no strip, no tint, period, on the windshield).
2. If you ever get in any type of an accident, you better hope your insurance, and the other persons insurance, dont find out about that windshield. If they do, your going to be in a heap of trouble.
3. Overall, yes i agree, tinting the whole front windshield is cool because I used to have it, but ask yourself if it is really worth the $$, frustration, and possibility of getting kicked off your insurance, all because of a piece of tint..
P.S., my insurance company found out about the tint, because i got two tickets for the windshield tint in a six month period, and it comes up on your driving record as "Faulty Equipment" and they kicked me off because they didn't want to insure a car that had faulty equipment.
