ticking, from engine and gets faster when raising rpm

Hey everyone,

i just got a 99 tl with the 3.2l

after doing some mild repairs, i have noticed that the engine has a ticking noise to it and when i rev it, it ticks faster. it is fairly loud, to the point if i have the radio and fan off i can hear it in the car. when outside the car i can hear it the most from the front lower area.

any ideas or has anyone seen/heard this a lot??

im worried it might be a rod bearing.

what would be my best way to determine if its valve lash or anything else

thanks in advance

Mike

start with the ac belt tensioner, on top of engine- front of car
very common part wearout, makes really bad noises

use a long screwdriver or mechanics stethascope to listen for growling inside it.
anytime over ~70kmiles is ready to fail

suspect that before valve or rod problems
unless you know the car was run out of oil !!

ok ill check out the tensioner tomorrow

i just got the car so i wouldn't know if it has ever been run out of oil or not
i do know one thing that it was driven to the shop i work at with a dead coil (major misfire) unsure of the actual mileage driven like this

i did try going from 5w30 to 10w30 to see if the sound gets quieter and there is no change

stay on 5-30 the engine prefers it for ease of getting oil flowing during these colder winter months
the 10 wont kill it but has no relation to warm running noise

reminder to those is sub freezing overnight or day temps
0w-20 SYNTHETIC will help your engine get thru these cold mornings at startup

note: stop by parts store for full electrical system test
this is when we use more amps and more batteries get sold,,,
