OH NO! I hope it is not repairable. If it were me, I would not want it back. Even if they deducted for the mileage, I would not want a repaired stolen trashed car back.

Those low life scums. I hope they catch them....

That's sad but I too hope the insurance company totals it. They won't be able to fix everything correctly and you will hate it.

sorry to hear about that...

The car will never be the same again, and you will never feel the same with that car after all...

So, I hope they total the car, or else you will have to take a lose and trade it in some how...

Wish you good luck

Yep, I wouldn't want to drive a post-theft car myself. It's got "dragon tracks" as they say

OK so here it is......when i saw my car, from what i can tell the theif enter the car from the sunroof. he disabled the alarm and bypass the immobolizer by popping the ignitition. and somehow started it up maybe hotwire it.

The stole: my fog lights,Stock and Alpine head unit, AEM intake, Cd Changer, Shift knob is the only thing i saw was stolen.... MY headlights HIDs were left intact

they left me a present though: Slash all my seats and door panels apart....

My question is since the seats and door panels are slash do u guys think the insurance co will totoal the car? I really dont want the car back now since all the mods are scriped...

Unfortunately I don't think they'll total it. New seat covers and door panels are minimal cost compared to the value of a 2001 TL. If there had been major body damage maybe, but not with the damage you describe.

maybe its someone who knows you since they might have known that youre car had mods on it.

seems like such a waste of energy to put all that time (and money) into the car only to have it stolen later on.

if the cost of the replacing those items is not sufficiently high, the car will not be totalled. sorry to hear about the matter, but make the car even better this time!

good luck!

I'm guessing $5,000-$7,000. Not enough to total the car.

I'm wondering if they towed the car. Unless they had a type of Master key, popping the ignition would not disable the immobilizer since that works in conjunction with the car's ECM.

forget what i said about making it better...

i don't think that is enough to total your car, so get whatever needs fixing on the car done and get a payout on the other items....then go and trade/sell that sucker!

that is the worse case scenario

they take all your aftermarket parts
but leave the rest of you car alone.
that is some scandoulous bizness
that in turns to your lose, if the car was a all beatup
then the insurance would be paying for it to get you a new car,
get rid of the car soon,

type-s soon for you!

Sorry to hear they found your car. I would trade it in or sell it as soon as i get it back.
The insurance company WILL NOT total your car for $6-7k worth of damage. Sorry.
Hope everything works out. Get a Type S!

how expensive are the seats i mean both the front seats have side airbags on them. since the seats are slash, then woudnt they have to replace the whole thing including the airbags? i heard soemwhere that if the seats are taken then its an automatic total. in this case its different its slashed so i dont know how it is... what od u guys think"

Did you have an aftermarket alarm with remote start? if so that would explain how they got around the immobolizer.

The reason they won't total it is because the majority of stolen equipment was aftermarket stuff. You better have receipts for everything you bought. Sorry to hear bout that.

Sound more like an insurance scam to me buddy. Anyone who is skilled enough to take a TL would not just steal aftermarket parts and slash the seats. Seems more like you want to trash your old TL to get a new TL type S.

Sucks to get it back and they won't total it! hahah!

But if you we're to fix it and try to sell it...shouldn't it be salvaged as "theft recovery"??? You can't sell it that easily.

Not all remote start systems have to bypass the immobilizer system completely. When the first remote starts came out and cars started showing up with chipped keys, the only way to make them work was to cut the chip out of the key body and tape it somewhere on the inside of the steering column so that when the car was remote-started, the ignition would "see" the chip, thinking it was in the ignition (when in fact it was just near the ignition). In fact, the ignition *always* saw the key in the ignition because the chip never moved. This setup *did* bypass the immobilizer system and made the car more vulnerable to theft, and some of the real cheap standalone remote car starters still do this (buyer beware!). But newer, more sophisticated alarms are different. The setup with my Clifford has one chipped key hidden somewhere in the car (even I don't know where) in a box that reads the chip and allows the system to be remotely started. But the immoblilzer circuit is not disabled or disconnected. When the key is put in the ignition to finally drive the car, the original circuitry checks to see if that key is also chipped. If it is not, the ignition is killed. I verified this with a non-chipped key I use in emergencies to get in my car. Works on the doors only but won't start the car.

So theoretically, if the thief were able to somehow hotwire the remote start (in my setup), he definitely could get the car started but he wouldn't be able to drive it anywhere. You need to step on the brake to engage the transmission interlock and stepping on the brake kills the engine if the key's not in the ignition. And an unchipped key in the ignition will kill it too.
