Question Suspension Knock

I got tokico blues and H&R OE's on the front done in March and the car hasn't been driven all that much since....

I looked at the paperwork and they did not replace the strut mounts when installing my springs and struts.

My car has this annoying rattle in the front and when I go over a speed bump.... I hear a knock when the strut is most compressed.

When I first looked at it the brake line clap was hanging loose and my front/middle splash guard was missing two clips... I screwed the clamp in and put clips in and thought I had solved the rattle... but last night when it was cooler outside... my car was rattling in the front again.

It doesn't always do it, making it a pain in the ass to diagnose

It makes the knocking when I go over the section points of the pavement while neighborhood driving... like 40mph.... and then when I have people sit in the front seats and go over a speed bump while my head is by the tire I can hear the compressed strut knock a little.

NTB said they think about 85% that it's the strut mounts if they weren't replaced... An acura guy said it could be the bump stops... I purchased the strut mount kit... but it did not include 5 or 8 in the diagram... It included the parts that go in the center like the bushings, plates, and stem.... and it also Did not include the bump stop : (

Do people generally replace number 5 and 8 (can they even go bad?)... what about the bump stops?

I have 105k miles and again the struts and springs were replaced in March... I'm really not that hard of a driver and turning doesn't make it any worse... Just the up and down motion and sometimes even if it's subtle like the crease between cement panels...

I just don't want to throw money at it and not fix the rattle... I also just got my motor mount replaced with the timing belt and that damn thing was shredded lol... The rear motor mount was replaced about a year ago when they put the new tranny in.

Maybe you guys can help figure it out if there's a common problem

NTB checked those and said they look good and I have new control arms and camber kit and everything all put on in March... I hate things that you can't pinpoint exactly... pain in the ass to troubleshoot when you don't have the equipment/skills to do it yourself uggh

yes you can get some rattling from #5 and 8 if they are worn. #8 is just a rubber piece that goes inside the the top hat, i just replaced mine last weekend and it solved rattles on both sides of my car. they are cheap, i paid 15 per side for both parts from acuraoemparts.com. but first check to make sure the ones you have on are tight to the car. they are supposed to be installed with the car up in the air and then lowered and tightened with the wheels. Just give them a good yank and see that they are tight. Check the nut on the top of the strut while your there. Is that tightened all the way down. And be sure that the rubber bushings in there (#4) are all in there good. mine were flopping around and not tight.

now that I think about it... sometimes it sounds like a slight snaping noise under the front end when I'm inside the car.

I think I'm going to just buy #5 and #8 and the bumpstops and when it's apart at least I'll have them in hand or just replace them anyways... Worst case senario is if I get all these parts and it's not even the problem lol omg !

no, but I do hear the passenger side clunk in the strut when at the most compressed point on a speedbump at around 5mph.

its probably not those. Those shouldnt make noise unless the rubber is completely gone. If 4 and or 13 arent installed or worn out you may get some noise. My guess is a ball joint or a endlink.

Does it seem to only happen on small sharp jolts? Small bumps in the road, track bars for rolling gates, small potholes? But probably doesn't do it on larger bumps, potholes, etc.? If this sounds familiar, I'll bet the house on the sway bar endlinks.

I was going crazy trying to pinpoint this problem for months until fsttyms1 posted a thread ranting about the same issue. My car would make a knocking noise on the right front of the car whenever I hit small bumps, potholes, and the track bar for our rolling gate in my driveway. Turns out the endlink was worn. I replaced both of them since I figured the other one was probably on it's way out too. No more knocking!!

I don't really know if it's much better but I bought some Moog replacement endlinks. MUCH beefier than the OE Acura parts and they're greasable. Plus they were about the same price. I got them at my job but I saw them pretty cheap on rockauto.com too. Good luck!

Yeah its small little bumps like you mention that I can hear it. I'm going to replace my endlinks today.

The funny thing is that it sounded great today... not a rattle at all, but sometimes it's justa knockin' lol... I can't hear it over my radio, but when I have a passenger and have to lower my volume down, is when it's noticeable.

I'll go get some good endlinks and post the results after a week of driving... I'm also going to wash my baby good and take some pics of my front end conversion : )

Well, so far so good with the moog front endlinks... I haven't heard the knock yet, so I'm hoping that's a done deal : )

Now, when I left there I hear a squeeking from my struts lol... !!!!

If I push up and down on my front end... it squeeks like a son of a gun... plz someone let me know what to grease now lol... I'm pretty sure it's the new endlinks, being that I just left NTB.... or something in there

I"m not sure... they came in a yellow box lol .. and I read good things about them... they are beefy and have a grease fitting underneath this black rubber that I lifted.

I really don't know much about them

ya so far.. I don't hear as much of the snapping sounds... but I still hear something when I go over a speed bump on my passenger side...

My control arms are squeeking a little on my driver side....

When I get some more money I'll probably get the strut mounts replaced, but only if it gets really bad... Otherwise... It's not a safety issue, so I'm fine with it

oh and no, these moogs are rubber.

lol... dirty third : )

they just look like to metal balls connected together that face 30 degrees in different directions....with a rubber sleeve over half of each ball and there is a place to put grease under the rubber sleeves. one endlink is probably 3 inches long.

I don't wanna go back under there to take a pic lol my car is low and I'm lazy son of a gun...

Huh end links? I have this same damn rattling sound over small bumps and I get some slight vibration in the cabin area when I go over uneven pavement for more than a few seconds. Would that also be a sign of bad end links? Cornering is also not as tight as it used to be.

Here you go..

Moog version:

Acura OE version:

You can't really tell much difference from these pics but trust me, when you compare the Moogs and OE's in person, there's a clear difference.

I might have the same problem but I am a bit confused here. Being at the dealership recently they mentioned that my “lower ball joints” need to be replaced.
I have started feeling occasional shudder in my steering wheel and more pronounced torque steer but that is about it, i.e. no noises yet.

Question

great news... I get to revisit this issue again yeah !

My car was fine... then I had this guy replace my struts with tokico blues and a few months later... the rattling began : (

120k miles on my 00' tl... the guy did not replace anything... he just put the new struts in and re-used the mounts and things...

I'm starting to think that maybe they don't fit the same and that could be the need to replace them...

Do any of you have rattling with tokico struts ?

Dont our cars have "strut plates" which contain a bearing that the strut rod rotates through? When I read your original complaint that is the first thing I thought of. They rattle when worn out.

its the strut top on the side that its making the noise on. its prob busted. most shocks dont come with new ones so they just replace them with the ones on the car. i had the same problem when i got my struts put on and everytime i went over a speed bump or a big quick bump in the ground i hear a rattle kinda sound, but just like you explained is what i was experiencing. hopefully that helps

Is this piece illustrated on the diagram above? I want to see if I can check that out too... Is it something I can inspect with the wheel on @ home?

I mean if it's something obvious, I would think NTB would have been able to find it, unless you have to remove the strut to inspect.

Cool Problem solved... For me

Ok I took it in to the guys who did my timing belt and he drove it and figured it out...

It was the strut mount bolt on both sides in the front and then the other rattle was because the bolt on front of my passenger side.... side skirt was missing.

Now my car sounds normal again yeeehaw !

I must have missed the side skirt bolt or something, because I usually notice stuff like that.

The only complaint I have is that when I left the place... and parked... I tried to restart my car and it was failing on me.... so I popped the hood and the belts were sawing into the wire (the 4guage replacement) that goes from the fuse box to the alternator... Sparking up under my hood.... I pulled it away and zip tied it....

My car started right up after that, but my power steering went out on me for a min after I restarted my car... Now, it works fine, but the power steering went out after I started my car again for like 2 seconds.... but this morning and for the past 4 starts of my car the power steering has been fine... Is there a fuse associated or something that could of happened hmm?

No, I don't : (

I took my car in for them to fix the squeeking timing belt they installed and I told them about the rattles... He just checked the bolts at the top of the strut mount I guess and it was a simple fix... If you can't figure it out... I'll ask next time I talk to them.

I never had to buy endlinks or anything.. just some careless mistake from the guy who installed my struts... Now my car sounds perfect... no annoying rattles...

I mean there's a few sounds, but it's normal and I could fix with some sound deadening material if I really wanted to.

Now, ever since the belt and pulley were sawing into my wire the other day... My power steering is acting up It's making a little noise when i turn my wheel to the right... guess I'll start looking for answers to that next pfft!

^^ To my knowlegde based on reading other threads about p/s it may be due to them overtightening something with the pump.

Figured I would revive this thread instead of starting a new one as the information is still relevant.

I'm have a knocking/popping sound coming from the drivers side wheel over bumps/dips in the road at all speeds (slow, cruising, highway).

In the past year I've changed (on both front driver and passenger sides) the struts, upper control arms w/ ball joints, lower ball joints, sway bar end links, sway bar bushings, inner and outer tie rod ends and a CV axle on the drivers side only.

I had the front of the car jacked up with the wheel off yesterday with a friend and we could not pinpoint the location of the sound, there is no play in the wheels and everything is nice and tight.

At this point I'm thinking it's either the lower control arm (bushings worn out?) or the Strut Mount Plate.. since the old ones were reused when the new struts went on last year.

This is the part I'm talking about: More Information for MOOG K160215

What do you guys think?

The dead arise... I just did my struts and springs, was getting some rattling in the top of my struts when going over certain road conditions. I bought the KYB strut mounts and the KYB strut bellow and collar. Now I just have a clunk under hard bumps in the lower area of my suspension. I will replacing my upper control arms and my lower ball joints soon. The ride is so much better with the new strut caps and bellows in place, almost like new...
