Suggestion on improving Tranny life.

ok... this is what i do to save my tranny. It works for me, but I am not so sure about others. I have always used SS mode, in the day time, and Auto at night, so I do use both function quite regularly. For me... I think the key in saving the tranny is "waiting the gear to go in to drive (wait about a second) before stepping on the gas. I know some people don't wait, when they change gear from Neutral to Drive, and thus causing a jerk before the car go off the line.

ok... i don;t know what you guys do, but i want to know if my theory really works.

yes... i do the same...
i use SS alot and i allow the gear to sit in b4 i gas the pedal....
even when up shift... i would shift and release gas pedal at the same time so that it would sit into gear then i would gas it again....
atleast i think its better for our tranny's
i never just leave the pedal to the floor through all the gears.... it seems alittle harsh
just my opinion tho..

i have a 2000tl and 2003tl-s A-spec....
no tranny problems on both...
i do drive the car some times...

when shifting while I am in motion (driving along) I try to keep the gas peddal in the same position. The transmission automatically attempts to rev-match to the engine and gear selected. The torque will be applied as it sees fit.
I know some folks mention laying off the gas in order for it to shift quicker (lock-in sooner) but it seemed foolish to me.
The tranny tries to match the engine RPM for for the next gear depending on the speed it is spinning the wheels (like you would if you were driving a manual - correctly). I try to leave well enough alone because the tranny knows what it is doing and I wouldnt try to force it by lowering the RPM where it then has to compensate for such and it may shift harder.
Now when going from reverse to drive, I like to linger in N until my car stops completely with the brake and the RPM's have settled.
I knew a kid back home that went thru 3 trannys on a brand new Carrolla in about 10k miles because when he would be rolling at about 5-10 mph he would slap it in D and hit the gas. That created a huge thump and would even chirp the tires!
My old roomie had a habit of doing that also, and the tranny in his S-10 didnt last that much longer after he bought it (it was used, so it is a bad theory of probable cause).
So no harsh shifts as such and you should be fine!
