SportShift...(racing and Gas)

Does the SS save gas, that's if i drive it in low RPMs, also i when u guys race or want to speed from a dead stop, do u use SS, when do u shift, at the redline for each gear?

SS does not save gas dude...The only thing that saves gas is a light foot in d5...Now when you wanna race, turn off TCS or VSA, put it in SS mode and stomp the pedal...The only time i over shift is between 2 and 3...I have TLS guages so the red line is higher, i usually shift at 6800RPM with out the rev limiter kickin in...Hardly ever shift late in 3rd unless, well you know im gettin whooped and thats rare...Shyne

TCS off, SS mode, stomp gas and hit redline everytime. I have yet to put the pedal to the floor. You know your car is fast when you don't have to beat on it to make it move.

SS does not save gas nor makes it faster.

I think SS makes the car more responsive... of course that just how I feel...

Then again, it's like the sports buttom in the M3/M5, maybe in SS they actually switch to a different ECU program, though make it faster...

Bitium, what makes u say this?

SS definitely does make you go faster. When you turn off VSA and throw it into SS mode you are able to utilize the power more effectively. You are able to ride the gears longer. And since most of our power comes from 2nd and 3rd, that's a big advantage!!

Don't be condesending. Backup what you say! It seems that your just stating opinion. I'm stating fact. I have seen on other boards Dyno's comparing the too. Grant it the difference is not huge, but there is a difference!!

Why don't you back up what you say. You are also stating your opinion. There is not such thing as a dyno to compare the two. I seen 1/4 miles times using both and they are the same.

Plus there is nothing that says that it makes your car faster or it saves gas. Not from acura or a magazine. So you are the one that has to prove it otherwise. NOT ME.

so get yourself on the right track. OK.

Well it seems to me that your getting agitated cause I'm calling your bluff!!!!

I will start looking for those dyno's that I'm quoting. Also, I'm talking about power, not gas!! Anyone that drives in SS knows that mileage is shot to sh&t. To save gas drive in regular mode.

I don't know what year your Acura is or how you drive it. But ask anyone on this board or the Type-S board and they will tell you that there is certainly a difference between regular and SS mode!! So if it's all in my head then it must be contagious cause there others that feel the same way!!!

I always thought that driving in SS DOES SAVE GAS depending on the conditions! Normally when you are driving in D5, you will stay in 4th gear even if you are going like 50mph. When you switch it in SS mode, you can shift up to 5th gear and wouldnt that save gas then?

this is my opinion, but when i drive in sportshift the gas is alot better. i drove around for hours with stop ang go traffic and the gas gauge only moved down like 2 little ticks... but i may also be used to driving a jeep all day with whack mileage. and the SS mode, if u use it to your potential is better. bc u cud downshift and what not. but if u use it the way the expect u to use it, the regualr mode may be better. i mean, i cud b going like 70 in 4th gear, then switch into regular mode and the car flies. the SS mode only seems to work better in the first 3 gears.

SS is better when you ar lets say racing on a highway and you have to go around a car or something, so instaed of the automatic shifting and wasting a second or 2 when you get around the car and step on the gas again, you can ride the lowest possible gear and hold it while going around the car and then stomp on the gas. More resposive? Yes, faster, I dont know. I mean it feels faster especially when you let off the gas and gun it, but that's because the car is usualy high in the rpm band. The best thing is when you can slip into SS for the 3-1 downshifts, or 42 downshifts, i have a 99.

bitum i respect your opionions and am not trying to fan flames ,but acura does publish that SS shifts 10% quicker thats 1 sec. for auto and 9/10ths for SS... more power? better gas ?doubt it.....
2/10ths of a sec better in the 1/4 mile maybe...

Hey bro. Well that might be by a professional driver or just used for marketing because it really does not matter. If what you say is true, you might be able to get a hair in front of the other car with SS. Of course, if done right. I doubt it makes a different in actuality with regular drivers. In my sole opinion with my experience I still think it does not make a difference or not enough to say "Let me used SS to beat this car next to me" See what I'm trying to say.

BTW thanks for the info.

That is a different story. I agree with you on that. I'm focusing more on 0-60 or 1/4 mile.

Same goes for save gas, you could really keep the car at the lowest RPM possible, but in reality is harder than you think and you would get tire trying to achieve a real gain on the MPG.

Trust me you will never beat the ECU on saving gas, but you could try.

In conclusion, the gains are so little or unnoticeable that is not worth saying that is helps in either gas nor power. Just for fun.

Consistency is the biggest problem with SS. In a daily basis, SS will not help you save gas nor make you faster. I hope I don't have to reply to this post again.
