Talking Sport Shift

Hey everyone, i'm new to Acurazine and have recently just got my first car. A 1999 Acura TL. I haven't tried out the sport shift yet because i'm a little scared if i mess up the tranny in any way, so if someone could tell me a bit on how to use the sport shift like when to shift etc. It would greatly be appreciated!

dont worry you wont mess anything up, you can engage it at anytime and it will down shift by its self if it needs to.

just use the + to up shift and the - to down shift. dont over rev much past the redline say 6500 is good place to shift wen flooring it. good luck and dont worry about messing anything up

any more questions others will be more than happy to chime in. Welcome to acurazine!

thanks for the reply! and just one more thing, I've read some posts about braking by shifting down that's bad for the tranny? If i brake would it shift down by itself or would i need to shift down on my own? thanks!

dont worry about having to downshift when coming to a stop, i would not recommend slamming it into 2nd gear and causing the rmp's to shoot up really fast and hard, that could be bad.

no, a 99 TL's four speed doesn't do that, and he has a 99tl. he must control 1st and 2nd gears.

00-03 will shift 1st and 2nd for you - 5 speed.

but really i didnt know that--it seems to me like my 99 does the 1-2 for me...is there a minimum upshift speed? i'm trying it at 10-15mph (where it shifts in full auto) and it waits till about 20mph to make the shift.

If you look closely, that person went up to 120-130 km per hour in second gear, which is close to 80mph.

Its pretty much useless in the city. Only time its really worth the extra is when passing a car on a two lane road. Its nice to be able to downshift, hold, and control the gears.

Yeah my old 99 would not auto shift to second gear for me when I was in SS. I'm glad it does in my car, because since I rarely use it, I'll forget I'm in SS mode and then wonder why I'm not getting anywhere. In the 99 there were a couple of times when I'd accelerate, forget I was in SS, and have the rev limiter go off a few times. haha.

Oh I miss that old 99 - it was a FANTASTIC car for me. I had the AEM CAI on it, and I miss that growl. I'm very glad I got the chance to experience 2 types from the second generation. I'd consider my self lucky! Next purchase will be the 09 TL. But I still have a lot of life in my 02 left, and I LOVE this car.

looks like the guy in the video isn't giving it much gas off the line and it still spins the tires--it's good to finally own a car with torque

I used to use the sport shifter all the time when i got my car and the tranny went at 35K, then on my second tranny i used it sometimes and my tranny went at 99k now i NEVER use it and my tranny is shifting BETTER then new and it has 165k, 66k on this 3RD tranny. So If I where U i would NOT use it, the auto shifts as fast if not faster the you can when you WOT!

so let me get this right.. And btw i got a 2nd tranny.. Tiptronic wont ruin my tranny at all? Just making sure cuz i've touched the tip a couple times on my 1st tranny and boy it was fun.

Btw, there was nothing wrong with my old tranny, since i was at 99,9xx Miles, i decided to ruin the tranny and get a new free 1.. Right now at a 100,0xx Miles

automatic D5 will short shift-low rpm shift and generally save gas over heavy throttle fun with SS mode.
Its easy to forget to put it in 5 on the freeway

Watch the downshifts into 3rd and 2nd- that puts the hurt on the clutches

Those with fresh warranty replacement trans-- remember to get on a 15k mile trans fluid change plan- make it last as best as possible

Personally, you will get WORSE gas mileage when using SS. Simply because when using SS you (well I do) tend to shift at higher RPMs than what the computer would.

SS really doesn't save you any gas mileage even if you try to shift at less than 2500 RPM and even then, you probably wont save much. I'd only use SS on hills and freeway onramps. If you take it to the track I'd rather use gateshifting. I've hit 14.9 for the 1/4 mile stock and I THINK our cars are 14.7 with perfect conditions, but I can't remember cause I've had this car for so long.

when I take my car to the track it allows me to shift to second. I can actually redline in 1st if I wanted to.

The real use for SS is exiting the corner in the proper gear to be on the torque band
Not for slowing down!!--the brakes do that job

Look up Track Day and send yourself to one!

Why would you use SS on the onramp?-
stomp the gas pedal and it will run up to redline and shift when left in D5

In SS- many discover the rev limiter~

yea, im sure the computer will shift it at the redline, but I was taking it up to about 6,000-6,500 rpm in 1st before shifting. I need a torque graph to see where our engines produce the most torque though.
