Smoked Taillights
hey guys, I've been looking for the tint spray so that I can smoke my taillights, but I can't find the spray anywhere. I've went by a few import racing stores and they tell me that I can't buy the spray over the counter. Anyways, just wanted to know where you guys bought your tint spray from.
Thanks in advance, D.

In Orange County (Stanton, CA), there's a JDM aftermkt dealer--Super Autobacs. www.autobacsusa.com or 714 903 9000. They're about $10 for a small aerosol can. They come in black, red & yllw. 1 can is good for 2-3 pairs of TL tails depending on how dark you want them. Spray them thin 1st and wait till it dries before adding any more coats. It's easy to get carried away. 2 coats, IMO is 'bout right. Gud Luck.

sorry, don't remember the name--label was in japanese. when i asked the fella behind the counter, he asked for the color i was looking for and went to a shelf. at first, they didn't have black. i had to come back a couple of wks later and picked it up. just ask for tailight spray.
i got the web address from their flier in the sunday paper. i'm told the company is big in japan's racing circuit. i googled super autobacs and found this: http://www.autobacsusa.com/index.html

it's $50 for the tint so the spray would be cheaper and easier to apply but are you able to take the tint spray off if you wanted to? pls post more pics of cars with tint or spray if anyone has this mod.

oyeah, PLUS it comes right off when you put some force on it and pull. so if u dont like it, its not permenant, so you dont have to worry about anything.
here's two more pics. one example of how it looks when everything is lit up.

its actually really easy to do. i did it in about 10 minutes each side.
the instructions and all the tool comes with the kit when you order it on rockblocker's site. and if you wanna take the top part of the tint off, you can just cut along the line with an exacto knife. i love the tints, easy to do, and not permenant so you can always take it off.

I odered VHT Nite Shades Spray off ebay for $17.50 (including shipping). I should get the spray by the end of next week. I am only going to smoke the red part of the tails and leave the top clear.

well depends on how you define tint.. its definitly not the same "film" material used for window tinting. so its a vinyl material used to tint your taillamps or headlamps.

How to apply tint spray
to install the tint stray, all I did was remove the taillight assembly, which is held in place by 6 screws. Then I cleaned the lights with Windex to remove all the dirt and oil . Next I masked off the area of the light I didn't want to spray. Then I applied my first coat of spray and let it dry for about 5 mins, then applied the second coat. After that I let the light dry for about an hour and then reinstalled the lights back on the car. After that, you can kick back and enjoy your new smoked taillights. Hope this helps, D.
P.S. I did all this in my garage to avoid getting dirt on the wet taillights.

I also used the tint spray, but before painting I scruffed up the orange in my tails (the part I was tinting) with a 3m scruff pad, and also cleared/wetsanded/buffed them afterwards. They came out great.

Thanks. You'll get instructions when you buy it from rockblocker. For some reason I couldn't align the firm perfectly so I had to cut around the edges. My suggestion is just to take your time so it'll come out right. Use a ruler when you're cutting between the red and white part of the tails. Good luck!

It's pretty easy to use rockblocker tint film. First, place the tint film on your tail lights to know where exactly it should be in place and determine which area you should trim off later. Then have everythings ready: spray bottle with water + few drops of dishwasher soap, hair dryer, and sharp knive/blade.
Step 1: Clean taillights and make sure the tail lights, your hand, and everything around workplace are superclean.
Step 2: spray the water + dishwasher soap solution on your tail light and outside part of the tint film. Make sure to keep your hand wet too to avoid finger print on the glue side of the tint film.
Step 3: remove the paperback slowly (half way only) and apply on your tail light from one side, squeeze out any bubbles and work slowly toward the other end. My suggestion is to work from inside (part next to the trunk) out toward the turn signal and from bottom upward since you will need to heat the top part of tint film to make it mold in the curve of your tail light. Make sure to keep the tint film, tail light, and your hand wet at al time.
Step 4: use the hair dryer set in low/hot to heat part of the tint film that need to mold. while heating the film with one hand, use the plastic blade (provided from rockblocker) to squeeze out any bubble and make the tint straight, keep the pastic blade at the edge of the film then immediately spray the solution on to the film. The action of hot, squeeze into place make the film stretch out to fit and cool water make the film stick to that shape. Repeat a few times until it straight and hold into the shape of the tail light. make sure to keep the inside and outside part of the film wet so glue won't set in.
Step 5: trim the outer edge with shap knive/blade. Try to have the blade rest against the rim of the tail light to have nice and even cut.
Step 6: Once done, go to the next tail light and repeat step 2-4.
Step 7: Cut the clear part by following the line that separate between the red and clear part. Using flexible ruler will help to have a nice straight cut.
Step 8: Clean up and take the picture of your car
Step 9: Post the pictures for all of us to see. Enjoys!
