Shudder When I let Go of Gas! and Hard Shifting When Going Uphill

I get like a shudder as if I am braking hard and my body moves forward when I let go of the gas. I don't even step on the gas pedal hard. I am stepping on it lighting and once I let go of it I get like a lag feeling and the car feels like I braked and my body lurches forward a bit but the car didn't slow down. I don't feel like it is a transmission problem as it doesn't feel like a shift or anything. And I am not just droppingthe gas pedal suddenly. Unless I don't take like 5 seconds to let go of the gas as slowly as possible, it happens.

Also when i am going uphill, I get a really hard shift from either 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd. I hope its not transmisson problems. These forums scared me like crazy. Everyday that I drive I am watching for any signs of transmission problems. No slipping or crazy jumps to 3rd gear with high revs. The transmission was changed in like Aug. 08' and I just bought the car recently with 124k.

Check your mounts.

I'm having the same problems but i just got my tranny replaced so i don't think its the transmission. i'm gonna check the mounts tomorrow

99AcuraTL03 05-19-2010 03:11 PM

so i checked my mounts today and sure enough my front mount is shot. Check yours too and let us know!

Did you have the let go of gas pedal shudder problem? How do you check your front mount? I wanna do the 1 person watching while other steps on brake and gas but I need a second person. I heard that you can check the front mount by looking for oil leaks but other than that is there anyway?

piggylover1985 05-19-2010 04:42 PM

Your best bet is to get another person to look for you, make sure you don't run him over lol. Mount do leak, but would be harder to see though.

i used a shop lift at school but im sure u can squeeze down there if u want. the mounts are right under the transmission between a brace and the actual tranny. theres a front and back one and yes it leaks

01tl4tl 05-19-2010 06:52 PM

the front one is directly down behind the radiator and the most common to fail

the oil leak is pretty obvious on the driveway- a few drips- or from underneath looking up and see the trail out of the mount

other method- with park brake set and wheel blocked so no one gets run over!!!!!
Have trusted friend put car in D and rev engine while holding brakes on
Do same in R
If a bad mount,, you, standing safely to the side of car- will see the engine jump with throttle application and release

piggylover1985 05-19-2010 06:53 PM

Broken mounts are commonly found with higher mileage vehicle.

Yeah, I live in the city so its kind of hard for me to do both of them. Especially since I don't wanna leave my parking spot or else I will have to spend like an hour to find another one. I'll check it with a friend when I have time as I cant jack it up. I'll see if I have any oils leaks tomorrow too. It's weird because I don't feel it all the time. Only sometimes when I let go of the trottle I feel it. But if so many people say it is, it probably is.

01tl4tl 05-19-2010 08:52 PM

these are expensive==120 bucks or so depending on dealership
and fluid filled is very strange,, plus vac boost for some years!!
test them with `the friend` method-
you will need a place to raise the car and support the motor with a floor jack and wood block to change the mount

it will be a few drops- like 2-3 just behind the radiator on the ground when you move the car back to see-- a strange hydraulic fluid unlike anything you have felt in your fingers..or it might all be gone by now but trail will exist from it

high miles failure- NO- these are found bad at warranty trans time-60-80kmiles and they are gone!
left bad and the pass side mount takes extra load then fails- keep going and more will fail in turn until the entire eng and trans is barely hanging in the car

I finally checked to see if my engine jumped. My engine jumped like 2 inches up at the front. Does this mean I need new mounts? I hope my side one didn't go yet. How much would it be around for new front mount including labor?

01tl4tl 05-25-2010 05:19 AM

$120 to 150 for the front mount
Labor 1-3 hours depending on shop

piggylover1985 05-25-2010 05:44 AM

You can do the mount by yourself and save you some money if you are willing to try. It looks worse than it is, but it's not that hard to do.

I'm too scared to do it. I'm not even ready to change my own spark plugs.

myisanog 05-26-2010 02:07 AM

It's okay if you don't want to do it. Shop for a lower labor rate shop and have them do it for you.

finalcross 05-26-2010 09:35 PM

Yeah, I bring it to my friend's friend's shop. Apparently, they do everything cheaper cause he gives them a bigger tip.

piggylover1985 05-27-2010 04:17 PM

Key word is "big tips"
