The transmission thing doesn't stop me from driving my TL anywhere. What exactly is the point of having a car you feel you can't take very far from home? I'll be damned if a car has that much control over me. Any car can break down, and I recommend crossing that bridge if/when you get there.

I took many trips from Toronto to Quebec. And for all those trips, the car never let me down..

Drive that TL with full confidence...if you keep thinking it will fail, it probably will, but not on your trip. You'll have plenty of warning if it starts to go out. Took mine about 6 months, no shit! Started with clunky shifts out of park into R and D and vice versa. Then, slight mis shifts and then finally, it would rev...then catch...it was still driveable and thats when I took it in.

I got a new tranny at 102000 miles... and about a month ago made a trip from Atlanta to Seattle, the car's now at 106500. The car (tranny) held up just fine.
Hope I didn't just jinx it.

I have yet to take my TL on a long trip either since I have got it but if I had to I would diffenently trust it. I just prefer not to put the miles on it and my mom has a company car so we take it on all the long trips since she gets a new one every two years. I mean dont get me wrong monday through friday my car gets about 10 miles on the highway to school and then back I just would rather not put 10k on it on a trip if I dont have to. I do like to drive to the point where it still works and its not just one of those cars that sits there and collects dust as i have heard thats not the best for the car. As far as trusting my tranny I totally do and I mean on trips your also going to be on the highway so the tranny wont be shifting as much either.

I mean, TL aint no supercar or anything (which could break down any time..) it's meant to be driven.. So what are you afraid of? Tranny wont stop you.. trust me.

You should drive it more than that. 10 miles to school, then 10 miles home = 20 miles per day. 5 days a week is just 100 miles per week. That's a tank of gas a month, or 5200 miles per year if you never miss a day including holidays or vacations. My TL sat for two years before I bought it gaining only 9,000 miles in those two years and it had a lot of little problems when I bought it (just 33,000 miles)

Yeah but I didnt include my weekend driving it can very from day to day depend on what I do and also its not like that every week im just giving an estimate. I mean I would say I do about 1k a month or so. Although a tank of gas per month doesnt sound bad at all.

Um, Sorry to hijack this thread but since the above two replies imply that less driving = more trouble with the car, I'm kind of worried..
Because for 4 months now, I've only driven around 200 miles max. Since I am in school and the car is sitiing in the garage at home, I only get to drive every two or three weeks.. The battery died once and everytime the car struggles a little to start up (I'd guess because it hasnt been used for 2-3weeks)..

So would this cause any problems?

At least its beenin driven I think the people who have the problems who drive it once a year and stuff if your that worried have your parents back at home start it and drive it around once and awhile but I think you will be fine.

Cars are built for one sole purpose.. and it isn't for fancy decorations. You definitely need to drive it more than that or it will cause problems. It's better to drive the hell out of it than to let it sit.

Have any car inspected before a long roadtrip and then enjoy. Your warranty is nationwide so no worry about being away from home. Most dealers are giving loaner cars while yours is in for transmission. I have one now and told them I had some 300 mile days this week, they just asked no smoking in the car and bring it back with the full tank they gave it to me with. Seems fair
Cant wait for some good road trips with the new trans and everything perfect in the car.
