Shaking and slight rattle only in reverse? Dealer says nothing
I tried to search many threads on this, but got no answers. I actually took it to a Honda dealership and they said they didn't know? I thought they would at least try to get me to replace something at a stealership haha!
My car has recently begun to shake more and also a rattle (sounds like a rough engine) but it's not the engine, ONLY in reverse, as I'm pulling out of the driveway. As soon as I put it in D4 or D5, the shaking and rattling is gone and don't feel anything for the rest of the trip. When I shift from P to R, there is NO jerking or loud thunking sounds.
Tranny fluid is nice and pink. Could it be the motor mounts or trans mounts? I couldn't see any fluid leaking from them -but then again the car does have 155k miles and no mounts ever replaced. How about CV boots, would they do that only in reverse? Is this something I need to replace right away? The labor on these mounts is going to be heavy, I will need to find a private shop to save some much needed money.

I do not think it is Tranny. I just had my Tranny rebuilt 4months ago and replaced all 3 motor mounts with hydraulic ones and car vibrates when you are at a stop sign. AS soon as I give gas , rattling goes away. I have external tranny cooler installed as well, timing belt done with Dealer parts and plugs changed

I didn't think it was the tranny since it's only in reverse and don't have any issues with the usual 2-3 shift, 3-2 downshifts. I have been doing 3x3 fluid changes every 15k miles, tranny was replaced under warranty when dealer found the gear damaged back at 45k miles. Have 155k miles now. Shifts are very smooth, tranny fluid is nice and pink, just replaced at 150k miles.

I don't think its the tranny issue.. A rattle engine or vibration while coming to a stop usually means dirty IACV.,
Have you cleaned your Intake Manifold/TB/IACV???

 Hey RichS, if you're still on the original mounts @ 155k......they're more than likely shot. The front and passenger side top mounts tend to go bad long before the miles you have. Personally, I'd doubt that it's the tranny.....but who knows ?
Check all the mounts closely. There's DIY's for installation.
How's the car's idle ? Have you checked the undercarriage exhaust shields for looseness ? Try to isolate the source of the noise, ie: front or rear, while someone else shifts the tranny into reverse. CV boots would hardly be the cause, but check all suspension and brake components to be sure everything's tight.
Does it make these noises both hot or cold, and in places other than your driveway ?

I guess putting it in reverse puts more stress on a particular motor mount and it shakes more?

Yeah, the shaking is only in reverse and it's only in reverse for like 10 seconds everyday while pulling out of my work parking lot!
I will check the motor mounts. How soon should I look into replacing these? I need to get some money together to get this done -I'm assuming the longer broken motor mounts go, can put a lot of stress on other engine parts due to vibration?

In addition to the shields, look closely at the exhaust hangers and try to move the pipes and mufflers around to see if they are grounding against anything. The engine movement in reverse twists the exhaust differently than it does in drive.

Mr.Helpful Diagram
For reverse the engine lifts up from the rear mount it must be broken allowing enough movement to make rattles or it can just be the exhaust system not hooked up right.

front and rear mounts are fluid filled and vac boosted!!!
a leak will cause 2 types of problems! -thunk-shake and engine roughness/miss
look for a few oily drops on ground, and from under the car look up at mounts
can do engine running test of mounts if needed
even new parts fail

broken mounts stress next part in line,,other mounts,,CV axle bearings-
the front breaks and goes unnoticed for 6-12 months,,taking out the side mount
see our vendors/sponsor list for dealers who cut a deal on parts cost to us

Im having the same problem right now, but it only happens when my car is going low speeds and idling in reverse. Just got all my mounts replaced with oem acura ones a week ago. Its driving me nuts!!! Does yours sound like a random noise, like no pattern to it? or is it regular
