seafoam question

so when doing seafoam,am i allowed to pour seafoa straight into my oil?

JoEvIt1491 10-05-2009 10:06 PM

yes but change your oil the next day, this is very important, and dont drive over 100 miles

add 1 to 1.5 ounces of seafoam to each qt of engine oil- or about 1/3 to 1/2 can for the TL then drive it 30 miles/minutes solid- immedialty change oil and filter while its still warm- so all the sludge stays liquidy and drains out
Thats from seafoams directions for max effect- 30 minutes driving in one drive, so its circulating under pressure and has time to do its job fully

Optional method- change oil filter- add seafoam and drive 100-150 miles over a few days, then change oil and filter with engine warm-important oil is warmed fully from a drive so all the stuff drains out
Thats if you have a really dirty engine inside or want to do a super job the 1st time
IMO_disclaimer do at own risk/decision
5-10 runs into vtec rpm-say 5000 for 20 seconds then back down to 3000 and back to 5000
to get seafoam into the oil passages that operate vtec and scrub them
Gen3 has a problem with sludge in those sliders so I figure better clean them on the gen2

ohk so if i dont put it into my oil, i only the seafoam diy thread and do my vaccum line and fuel tank, would i stay have to change the oil or no?

01tl4tl 10-06-2009 03:01 PM

Only have to change the oil if you added seafoam directly to the engine thru the filler cap on the valve cover

Otherewise- foam the oil before your next change as scheduled

gas tank and vac port methods do not mandate an oil change

SeaFoam

I had a vehicle that I seafoamed before and what I did was added it to the oil than drove around for thirty minutes or an hour than changed the oil right away. I didn’t want to leave that stuff in the engine too long.

i just foamed mine again last weekend before an oil change. i didnt pour any in the oil, i put 1 can thru the vac and 1 in the fuel tank with about 3/4 of a tank left. which is better? pouring it in the oil or thru the vac?

01tl4tl 10-06-2009 09:50 PM

the oil method is to clean the oil passageways JUST BEFORE oil change

using the gas tank method or vac port has no relation to the oil!!

You can leave seafoam in the oil a month/500 miles with a new filter and monitor condition of oil on dipstick every day
Thats if you have a really old crudded up engine to restore

For the TL- a 30 minute drive will do nicely,, then change oil and filter
Only need 1/2 can of seafoam in the oil

01tl4tl 10-06-2009 09:52 PM

in the gas- `cleaning strength` is 2 oz per gal -thats 1 can to just under a 1/2 tank of gas

`maitenance dose` every 5000 miles is 1 to 1 ratio or 1 can to a just under a full tank

I don't know if it's related, but I seafoamed my car about a month ago(one can in the vac port, and one can in 1/2 tank of gas) and after I used all that gas, I filled it up and changed the spark plugs and they had a little bit of rust on the bottom of the threads...

Anyone know what may cause this? My car has 131k miles, I bought it with 115k, the previous owner was 'anal' about the car and had all the service done at the Acura dealer I purchased the car.

01tl4tl 10-07-2009 12:44 AM

rust on the top threads was from age and exposure to atmosphere-
supposed to change the plugs at 105, many of us do it anytime after 60k miles- so I bet your car is running way better now!

repeat foam in gas and vac after a month/ 1500 miles then good for a year
wont hurt new plugs at all

Russell The Love Muscle 10-07-2009 12:59 AM

ok, I don't notice any difference in performance or throttle response, but I am getting 2mpg better than I was before!!

I'm assuming that I had the original plugs in then, because the previous owner always followed Acura maintenance book, but never brought the car in the the 105k... :( now I have to do it myslef, once I get another car!

yessir, throw in 1/2 can drive like a mad man for 30mins (lol at your own risk of course) and then bring it to him and tell him to do it right away don't let your car sit.
