Post Sales Tax in Virginia

Lets say I get a TLS for 30K and I trade in my 99 TL for 20K, do I pays the sales tax on the entire amount of the new car or just the difference?

I imagine that state tax rules are different from state to state, but if anyone has bought a car recently in VA (with a trade-in), please let me know

Thanks

I believe you only pay sales tax on the difference between your trade and the new vehicle since you already paid sales tax on your trade-in. I found this info on the VA web site some time ago, but was unable to relocate it this AM -- call the DMV.

I looked up the dmv web site just to double check what you said, and found this:
http://www.dmv.state.va.us/webdoc/ci...hicles/sut.asp

Chief_C: what do you think now? My interpretation of the middle paragraph tells me that AC is right.

Thanks.

Thanks for finding the link. However, I interpret the following quote to mean the trade allowance is subtracted from the new vehicle cost to determine the sales tax.

But guess what? It doesn't matter what you or I think; a simple call to the DMV will provide the interpretation that matters...

"Credit given by the dealer for a trade-in, rebate, unpaid lien or other unpaid claim against the vehicle is not included when determining sales price for the collection of sales and use tax."

The more I read that paragraph, the more this thing hurts my head. I will give them a call and see if anyone at DMV can clearly explain to me what amount is taxable, and what is not.

your trade in will just be treated as a down payment. When you buy your car they will talley up cost, tax, tags, freight, and subtract trade in.

AC, you were right all along.

I just picked up my TLS and paid sales tax on the full amount. Apparently there are only 4 states in the US that calculate the tax in that fashion, and Virginia happens to be one of them.

TLeast,
I'm still a little confused.

(Making up numbers,) Do you mean that you paid, say, $30K for your new TL-S, and traded in a car worth $10K, so your state tax bill was $20K * 8% (or whatever your tax rate is)?

Geez... I wish they did that in California.

He means he paid tax on the full purchase price of the new car (not less the value of the trade). VA is 3.17% on autos.

Sorry for the confusion. The TLS cost me 31,300 and the tax rate of 3% in VA ($939)was applied to the full amount. Even if I had a trade-in valued at 20,000, I still would have had to pay the entire amount ($939).

Got it.

Well, look on the bright side: your sales tax is ~3%. I just paid like 8.5% sales tax in Santa Clara County, CA.

Ya gotta pay extra for the sunshine tax.

Did you get the Nav system for that price? I got mine w/ spoiler, locks, mud guards, mats, trunk tray, no Nav in Roanoke for $31000. Just want to see how price compares to NoVA.

Paid $31,300 including NAVI + freebies listed above + Tax + Tags + $180 documentation fee. Total out the door was $32,500.

I dont know how I was able to get that deal here in the Northern VA area. I guess I was lucky!!

I think NOVA is flooded with a supply of TL's. Although some colors are still rare here.

That's a pretty good deal! When I bought mine mid April, the best deal I found in VA was in Roanoke at Duncan. Every one else (dealers in Norfolk, Richmond, and NOVA anyway) were coming off sticker no more than $700 -- not a very good deal in my opinion. Without the spoiler, I could have gotten my car for $30,300 (about 3% over invoice), about $1000 more than the equivalent of what you paid.

Also, who was your salesperson at Radley? I have a friend who's in the market for a TL-S and I think he will probably contact them.
