Rust...help please

I'm not too concerned right now seeing as I just noticed it, and I check my car up and down everyday. And on top of which, the rust is tucked under the trunk, so it can't be seen with the trunk closed. However I'm aware that rust will spread, which is what makes me a bit concerned. What do I have to do to remove the rust? I used some maguire's scratch x remover to remove 90% of the rust off the little chip, and then I applied one thin coat of touch up paint to prevent the rust from spreading. Any other advice on removing it, and ensuring it never spreads???

thanks

Well, sounds like you caught it early which is key. If it's exposed surface rust, just putting touch up on top of it won't make it go away. Chances are it will still "live" under the paint.

I have a couple of small chips that went past the primer and showed some surface rust. I've used 3M's Rust Avenger with great success. It's a pen type product. Just apply it to the rust spot. It does some chemical reaction with the rust and turns it black. Then you can use that as the primer or put more primer on before the touch up.
My chips where no bigger than a couple of pinheads.
Hope this helps.

is the rust from a chip in the paint? if it is take some ultra fine (400-600) grit sand paper and carefully sand the chiped area MAKING SURE to REMOVE ALL the rust. after than apply thin coats of touch up pait to the area you sanded untill its built up a little higher than the paint, then lightly sand it with some 800-1500 grit and buff.! you will never know it was there!

yah the chip seems to have been caused by something that nicked the paint. However at first it was a white chip (down to the metal), but now it started rusting...

I gotta fix it tonight.
