Replacing Tranny fluid on high mileage 1999 Acura 3.2TL
#41
It's easy enough to attempt trying the 3x3 tranny fluid drain and refill using the good stuff, genuine Honda atf fluid. There is a DIY on this along with replacing the tranny filter. But when researching, keep in mind that your '99 is different than the newer 2000 and up models with the "5 spd AT". Worth a shot at less than $100, compared to a rebuild.

Ok so just thought I would hop in and thank every one for the input on this thread I believe it just saved my 99 tl I bought it in 2010 for my ex wife as we needed a good car for our baby it had 90k miles no idea of previous maintenance but it ran great and was solid mechanically.
She wouldn't give me the budget to take care of the car how I wanted to but it didn't matter at the time it was "hers" not ours like I thought it should have been but long story short. 2 years ago she filed the divorce and took the car drove over 35k miles with out changing the oil unless you call the engine shutting down because it ran out of oil an oil change. Ran regular octane gas in it when it would knock on mid grade ran the brakes till they were metal to metal melted 3 of the 6 coil packs and brought it back expecting me to fix it. I gave it a shot but after an oil change it burn 5 quarts of oil in 7 miles she had fried the engine the transmission slammed so hard when it would shift it would chirp tires under mid to high acceleration. She wouldn't pay for the repairs so I have her 700$ for it as it now had 224miles on it and a blown motor. I was so saddened by this I parked it out back in the trees while I figured out what to do with the car.
Last July my sister was moving to Texas and needed to find a way to get her things down there so I decided to fix my girl up after sitting for a year... she was not happy. Found an engine and tossed it in took a while first time under its good for more then an oil change. The new engine helped the even power I guess made the shifting smoother but it was still rough it hauled a trailer 2,500 down then rolled to new Mexico and back to Maine like a champ only tired to over heat on me 3 times but the transmission didn't slip once it was imagine in the gears so it's almost been a year and most the bugs have come out just from being used. at 240k miles the and I know I never got the transmission fluid changed that was more then I was ever allowed to spend... transmission was starting to get worse again then I found this thread so far on I have one change to go and it shifts like it did 3 years ago slightly rough but not breaking engine and transmission mounts rough I'm changing out for the 3rd time on most likely Tuesday and giving it an oil change as well. Plan to run this fluid for about a month then switch the transmission fluid out to royal purple. By then if this keeps getting better it will drive like it did when I bought then I get to hunt down the troublesome voted issue so I can enjoy the power she once had.
This forum has helped with just about every issue I have found in my 99 tl thanks every one this place is great for those that just can't figure out what to do about an issue
