Regular Maintenance for 03 TL
MAybe their is a post of this here already, seached for one but came up with nothing.
Anywho,Im looking to do some regualar maintenance/preventive maintenance to my ride. She has 152k miles on her and trans has been replaced by the mom and pop shop I bought her from. Just looking to do some maintennace to her and make sure shes up to par for another year. Still owe $9k on her so want to make her last. |
has the 105k maintenance been done?
that consists of timing belt, water pump, drive belts, and valve adjustment. also should flush out the power steering fluid, and brake fluid. other than that air intake filter, oil change, maybe a drain 3 and add 3 quarts of atf-z1 to the tranny. make sure to inspect the motor mounts for wear or play. |
www.owner.acura.com register there, has complete maitenance schedule and much more, store radio nav codes there safely, owner operating book free download!
little things to do: silicone spray on all rubber seals for doors etc, same for all the hinges and lock parts. Clean and wax painted metal where those rubber seals meet lube window tracks flush brake fluid completely DOT4 spec fluid (it may say 3/4-thats fine) clean and relube brake pad sliders clean and paint calipers so they look good - not rusty!! |
Note Honda no longer makes Z1 atf,,it has been replaced with DW-1
many are trying it and getting smoother shifts right away! |
pull a spark plug and inspect replace every ~70kmiles, the right plugs cost 8 bucks each
Did you know we have cabin air filter system? its behind the glovebox- 2 filters next to each other in a pull-out tray,,parts stores sell them 2 to a pack,,honda sells them solo, need to buy 2,,,antimicrobe antibacterial do a good job see diy section for help and other projects that are common If the shop you bought it from has any history that would help knowing about the timing belt is your main issue now then ps and other hydraulic fluids flushed a new radiator cap never hurt anyone note- the TL temp should always be stable at 1-2 lines below half anything else means a problem |

many are trying it and getting smoother shifts right away! i have about 13k miles on my rebuild (2009), did a drain 3 and add 3 of z1 about 7k miles ago. i am eager to start using dw-1, yet i dont want to create any problems. my tranny shifts fine, except for first gear being a tad harsh when its cold. color is red and smells normal. basically want to do a drain 3 add 3 within the next 1k miles, using dw-1, then 2 more soon after. your thoughts? also for the op, NGK Iridium XI spark plugs, i have them and highly recommend them. |
^^ If you use Z1 or DW-1, there won't be anything to worry about. They completely STOPPED production of Z1. That means that Honda is confident in it's backward compatibility.
Either way, the fluid isn't really the problem. I doubt you'll have anything to worry about with DW-1, even if you have a worn transmission. However, if you haven't serviced the fluid in a long time, any fluid (regardless of brand/type) can kill it. |

oops.. idk, but i always thought his frst name was Steve.. sorry Tom!
|
since your trans has been replaced once,,(what does by mom and pop shop mean- acura unit or local rebuild)
do you have the miles that was done at..after 109,,,,within the last 50kmiles? may as well get it on the new fluid now a 3x3 or the `engine running- pump out while you add in` method will do it fast and efficient see tube vid on accord atf change 3x3 was developed for `if dextron3 was ever added to atf`, it had to be removed as fully as possible May be worth letting acura do it with their new machine that does the running fluid changeout,,ziner reported $150 cost for full fluid change! |
okay, thanks 01tl04tl!

Hey guys I was gonna look up this myself.

also look in gen3 105 service diy ,,they have better pics,,same procedures
the diy thread is 3rd item down the main gen2 list,,`Official diy list` is the title but you cant miss it! has 2 post with `linked-list` of every diy we have (or most of them) extras to do now if skilled at diy --valve adjustment non-skilled extras: cabin air filter, seafoam in gas tank twice @ 1 can to half tank |

Anyway, it may or may not be worth checking out: http://www.ericthecarguy.com/tools.aspx?tid=3 (preview vid in there too) |
Yea thanks there was another thread today that had links to these:
https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tl-1999-2003-98/diy-timing-belt-695821/ https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tl-1999-2003-98/120k-service-completed-610450/ But money is tight and dont know if i will have time, but i want to do some preventive maintenece :dunno: |
whats your current mileage?
there is some leeway built into those numbers,,,many run well past with no prob I know that 175k freeway miles/10 years is the limit for an accord t-belt~ similar to ours with the `interferance engine` design = belt breaks exhaust valves bend= replace engine instead of snapping, it shredded while running, wraps itself around the other pullies and disintegrates into shreads of thread and burnt rubber (not my car and not driving it-just know the story) |
the 105 parts aftermarket (gates) for water pump t-belt tensioners idler pullies etc. runs $250-350
there is a great deal at $295 for the acura `kit` as used in the service dept. at santa rosa ca. Prestige Acura, see thread for info, its a score if you want OE cant go wrong with the OE water pump- its proven itself the rest I am comfortable with gates,, as a well known and trusted supplier of parts- used in many many shops |
good maitenance on your recent purchase would include:
ck the spark plug condition engine air filter, cabin air filter replacement brake fluid flush, ps fluid flush, coolant gets done with the water pump egr system cleaning and service (lube arm of egr valve) Service-clean the TB-IACV (acces thru botttem of TB) Lube throttle and cruise cables, clean and lube throttle return springs Lube all hinges and locks with silicone or deep creep (seafoam aerosol) works really well for this treat all rubber door trunk hood seals with silicone spray lube and of course seafoam twice thru the gas tank at 1 can to just under half tank to clean everything from the fuel pickup to the cat--with no danger to anything |
What about doing 2 cans with a full tank? Just curious if there is any issue since you are recommending them to do it thru 2 half tanks anyways, in some cases at least, sometimes you just recommend they do it once.
BTC |
either way,
many people scoff at the thought of adding ~20 bucks of product to a tank of gas,, but $10 a month for 2 months they can handle~ the `cleaning dose' ratio is 2 oz per gallon, ideal use includes some trips over 30 minutes solid driving at speed. doing it over 2 tanks assures at least some good hot cleaning time will occur If you are going on a long trip,,,,perfect! do it all at once if you like If you do the vac port method, only 1 time thru gas is needed For those who dont want to mess with engine covers and sip sip or spray spray, the 2 cans in 2 half tanks method will clean everything, all the same parts as vac port- just not instantly,,, and all the fuel system |
