rear view mirror and windshield
My rear view mirror has something going on with it. it looks like there is a liquid inside it that is shifting and it two colors in the mirror. what's the fix for this? and is the mirror glued to the windshield? if i replace the mirror, should i get a new windshield too? mine is really pitted. thanks for any help and advice

GO! Right now go and wrap it in several zip lock bags!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When they start to leak like that with the bubble inside they can burst.
The chemicals inside it are deadly and will eat through plastic!
Dealers will sell you the mirror for ~75-85$... They used to replace them for free, the new ones don't have toxic stuff ether.
Take it to a glass shop and get them to throw it on - get there opinion on the new one - but its not glued on, someone broke the mount though when they tried to change it once though.

its bolted at the top, and has a slide on mount that is attached to the glass
See the thread `Rearview Mirror exploded` for important info
retail is $150, dealers that support azine often go $75-80, since the maker stopped the exchange program.. they try to help
or you can trade yours in for 80 to the new maker..
non dealer mirror will be some bs- no auto tinting feature and wont match the current mounting structure
ck the diy for how it goes on, not that difficult if you are patient - only takes 20 minutes, but the wrong pressure anywhere and you just bought a 350$ windshield
If you are stuck- just buy a cheap `child rearview mirror`- suction cups to the glass and you can at least see whats behind you

REPLACE the mirror FIRST. Take it out of the car now. The chemical inside it isnt good for you and will stain your interior when it leaks. Take it out now and get a new one.

i cracked my windshield when I tried to replace my mirror a while ago - be careful when replacing it but like everyone said - take care of it ASAP and wrap the mirror up until then.

if you have not changed a mirror before and dont know about the slider clip that locks the parts together
spend the 20 bucks at glass shop for a pro to install.. without breaking your windshield

make certain its brand NEW
many people got a free replacement or bought one,, and resell the old one online!!!
wrap your bad mirror in ziplock and tape it up - in case it lets loose that may slow it down~

When my Mom returned her TL (yes I had the same car as my mom - start the jokes now) I swapped my non-functioning rainbowed mirror with hers. This was in 2001 - well I got about another 6 months before that one quit. Not leaking but I never replaced it so I dim it manually now by moving my head out of the glare!
Remove the trim cover and loosen the big safety screw. Easy peasy.
No leaks though. i have seen pics and that chemical will destroy the console...
