Rattling from sunroof area...but here's the catch!

okay so I'm getting a weird noise coming from above my head whenever I drive. But here's the catch...I already had my sunroof sealed with the tape to silence the squeaking noise. Anyhow when I close the sunroof and put pressure on the glass, it seems that no apparent noise is coming from it. However, when i have the glass shut, and the sunshade opened, it sounds like it's coming from the top of the sunshade. Pretty much in the same area as the rear light on the roof of the car. Has anyone else experienced this problem with some noise coming from around the sunroof area?

also guys, you should know that only going over violent bumps (speed bumps, and some really badly paved roads) will make the noise occur. When driving on regular roads, the noise is non-existent.

thanks guys for any upcoming advice.

Yes, I have that too; it's a "ticking" noise when it's closed (I have the tape too; it happened about a year after the taping).
I haven't taken the time to find it yet, but applying pressure makes it go away. I tried lubricating the rubber and it didn't make any difference.
Hopefully someone else has found/fixed this too.

I had a similar problem with my 99 TL. The noise was still there after the the sunroof TSB. Mine turned out to be a cross threaded bolt that attached the sunroof to the body's roof. Since the bolt was cross threaded and could not be tightened all the way down, the washer rattled whenever I went over bumps. Car was dead quite on regular roads.

I'm confused; you said (above) that you already had the tape applied as per the TSB and then you ask where it goes??

I just got that noise fixed, the one where you have sunroof closed and shade open. I took it to a dealer to get it fixed, along the 15,000 miles service. I don't know exactly what they did, but this is how I think they fixed it....they gave me a TSX for a loaner, so I got back at the closing time..hehe, so didn't have time to go over the work in detail with the service guy.

So, here it is. When I open the sunshade, it feels like there is a "half ring" or "holder" on each side that hold the sunshade in place. I feel little, very little, resistance when the shade press on the "holders." I think these "holders" are keeping the sunshade from vibrating or squeeking in normal driving. Anywayz, no more annoying sounds coming from the sun roof. Maybe there was something in there that is suppose to hold the shade, but I never felt them before.

I had it fixed before where they only put lubrications on it or something. The noise came back after couple of weeks. So far, it's been couple of weeks since they put "holder" in there, and no noise...so happy.

I hope this was helpful. Since car is under warranty, they fixed the noise no charge. Plus, having TSX all they long was very fun...better than RSX that they gave it to me before. I just love my service guy for giving me a loaner everytime I bring my car in...I an looking forward to my next visit, I think 2004 TL should be available next time.

I already got mine taped up by the dealer, but the noise was still there. During my last visit to the dealer I told them about the noise and they said they didnt hear any rattles and that the maintenance was already done on it.

So I guess it's my problem now?!?!

My tape is starting to peel off.

I would love to see some directions on the silicon spray.

The stuff I have is in a can the same size and style as WD40. It's black, has some red scribbly lines, and with white letters and says (hold onto your hats): "silicone spray".
It's got the little straw-like thing that fits into the nozzle (again like WD40) and I just sprayed a rag with it and went all around the rubber with the roof open. I used the spray directly in the crevices and wiped off the excess. None of the squeeks at all in over a year (I did this before the dealer apparently knew of the tape issue remedy as they said they could try this or I could do it myself)...

SC354, I had the exact same problem you described. The dealer replaced the sunroof tray. It was a big job. The headliner and front seats had to come out.

Try here:

But I've also seen it at a lot of hardware stores. Runs about $7-$10 a can.

No idea where to find a link on this. All I did was take it in and complained and they said they would take care of it and that it was a known issue. If you search the board you will find that lots of people have this trunk rattle.

I think I may have the answer for the mysterious sound, I recently took my TL to the dealer to get my sunroof checked out and they changed everything....glass, rails, everything except for the screws and the bushings. And that was all it was, the bushings, springs that hold the tracks in place, went bad. So I got a new sunroof out of it, and it's quiet. I like to thank George at the service counter and Peter and Doug, the techs, for taking care of my car. Great guys at Mike Harvey Acura.

it's not the seal, have the dealership look at the bushings, that was what was rattling in my TL
