Rack question need help

I was under the car yesterday when I noticed some oil blobs on one of rods on the car, looked around an notice the oil was comming from the cv boot on the rack and tie rod meet, the boot is broken where the clamp is. I just came from Midas and the guy said it could be contaninated with dirt and they would have to replace the whole rack is this true or are they trying to make me spend over $500 for nothing. I figured degrease repplace rod regrease puton new boot... are they trying to rip me off.

is it a cv boot or is it a rack boot- very different items
Is it low on PS fluid? you have a serious issue to fix now!
if not low on fluid:
You could try doing a full flush (see owner book procedure) on the rack twice to push out all the old fluid and crud and replace with HONDA ps fluid- its special for our system
Replace the boot and see how it does

There are many alternatives to a new rack- dont panic- work the problem
Dont try any seal swellers or such- if its a leak fix the seal
If its just a boot - clean the system and replace the boot
Does the steering feel funny- stiff in turning?

Note: if this were a CV axle bearing boot- I would agree that dirt has gotten in and destroyed the cv bearing surface- replace axle assembly (under 100$ at napa with brand new everything)

Note2: Midas only knows how to replace complete systems on anything!!

If you need a pro, look in the phone book ads for a smaller private owner auto repairing shop with honda/acura listed as something they specialize in or work on in general.

Remember that auto repair is very slow now with bad economy, and the SALES-- I mean `service` writers-- have quotas to meet- many mouths to feed...

the PS fluid should be between the lines with engine running and fluid warm from short drive
