Racing in 3rd gear?
Hey guys,
I've heard that the best way to race is to put our car in 3rd gear and then stomp it. Is this true? Why? Then what do you do to get back into drive? Do you have to brake all the way to shift back up? I don't race that often, so any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Peter.

The secret is to keep the car in the power band. For our engines, the VTEC range is ideal (4800 RPM to redline). Pick the gear which will put you near the bottom of the power band, then stomp on the gas all the way to redline; upshift, and repeat.

Also, not many people know that if the car doesnt want to let you downshift, even though you can clearly see that it has some rpms left to go in the lower gear, that you can still do it. What you have to do is briefly let go of the gas, downshift and gun it, but be prepared to upshift.

Well, for a 1/4 mile, if you put it in D3, then after you pass the 1/4 mile and let go of the gas, you will be staying in 3rd gear and take advantage of the engine brake.
however many C5 auto owner run consistantly 0.1 sec faster in D3 VS D4

Thanks for the info guys. For the 1/4 mile, if you floor it in d3 and then want to return to normal driving, do you have to brake to a stop and then shift to d5?
