Question about Paint Job

Ok before anyone says anything, Yes I've tried searching the forum and no, I could not find the answers and hence I'm posting here.

I own a 2002 TL-S WDP and over the past year I've incurred alot of small scratches on my front and rear bumpers and have been thinking about repainting them.

I asked a pretty well known body shop in the OC for a price qoute and they said that for an entire repaint, a bumper would cost $500. So times that by 2, it's $1000 for a repaint of the front and rear bumpers.

I have no knowledge in body work, but isnt this a little high? So Basically is this an accurate qoute or is it overpriced?

Would the cost be cheaper if they could "feather" the scratched area?

Is WDP even capable of being "feathered?" (I've heard people say that they needed to repaint an entire panel in order to get scratches out.)

Lastly, I have the WDP OEM Kit and sad to say, the paint match is crappy. I'd like to get the front/rear lips and side skirts painted as well... how much will that run me?

I live in orange county, (Irvine area) if anyone knows of any good body shops that can do decent work for a fair price, shoot me a pm.

THanks ahead of time for the answers.

EDIT: PS one more thing... how much would a complete repaint of my car run? Its just an idea, but I'd like to try and paint the TL Sundance Gold... lol... but then again maybe not

repainting an entire car, properly, probably $4k - $5k. now your scratches, if you run your finger nail over them lightly can you feel the ridge, like its cut in there, if they are just light you can get most if not all buffed out. there are some "mobile" painters for these kind of instances where they come to you and can fix it on the the spot, kind of like the dent wizard people. nothing like trying yourself by getting some meguires scratch x-out and seeing if that'll help.

For starters i would ask around to a few other shops also. (just to get a idea, and ask questions about the sides also)
As for the price, thats a little high but not too bad. Its all labor and very little material.

Anybody know how much the paint costs..... say if you were to do it yourself. I have the same problem as BraveDemon, only mine is FPR. I have access to a paint booth and I have some pretty nice paint guns..... So any idea on how much paint costs?

All depends on how much you need. Assuming your doing the 2 bumpers, it will take aprox 1 qt sprayable base, and also asuming you will need all the other material.

Its alot more expensive if you dont have the material already or in mass quantities like a body shop

So by that figure
Primer?
1/2 qt base color (not sure if thats a tricolor or not) est on this color 40-150 depending on brand and wether or not its a single or tri (i believe its a tri)
reducer 20-60$
Flex additive (not necessary, but recomended) 20-25$
clear 30-300$
hardener 30-70$

By those needs id say probably close to 140-300 for the material (all depending on the brand purchased, and given you can find clear in 1qt quantities

I would say that is a hell of a lot cheaper. I can't believe that it costs 5k to get the whole car painted. Would you think that that is a guesstimate or is that an average. I would think that 5k would be for a custom paint job, not a stock repainting.

5k to repaint a car.... Yep. Deal with it.

1K for bumpers, a tad high, id say $750 is a little more fair.

It all labor in the prep work. The materials for a full paint job are only like 1k bucks depending on color and all. The rest is for the labor involved in preping the car for paint, but this is the most important step, cause if you mess up the prep ther will come out lopoking like crap even if the painter is great.

And to the original poster, 1k is high for two bumpers. Granted pearl colors are slightly more expensive (in cost and requiring 3 steps) but in California should be able to find places that will do it for much less.

Well start believing. Its all labor, and for a good job, jambs and stuff it takes alot of time. the materials to paing a whole car usually range in the 700-1k range. but to sand and prep the whole car thats alot of hours and painting every thing just as long.

If you care a lot about your car, look for 'I-CAR' shops. If not, just go to Maaco. They'll do an OK job. You got to pay for quality work. I know, nobody wants to be overcharged. PM Songoku(Paul). He has a shop in OC (Tustin/Orange). Good luck!
