Question

Hello, recently I had my tranny rebuilt (less than 5,000 miles) and I read an article somewhere saying:

"Be aware that the Gen 2 TL suffers from Honda's automatic transmission recall / class action lawsuit. Approx. up to 8% of all V6 Acuras/Hondas from '98 - '03 suffer premature tranny failures. If you do mods to your car, it's best to install an aftermarket transmission cooler (see the CT-Engineering site for one), and it's best to religiously change your transmission fluid. Use only the best fluids, like REDLINE brand. "

Anyone have experience with aftermarket transmission coolers? And is this the right move, what brand would you recommend?

I drive an Acura 3.2 tl 1999.

Also I'm thinking about adding a supercharger to my tl. Any thoughts?

Sorry if I am posting on the wrong thread, this is my first post.

Thanks in advance.

First you should register your TL with myacura.com and run a vin search to see what warranty/recall work your TL has had done by Acura. Even a call to your local Acura dealership doesn't hurt. Most likely they did the oil jet service but you may be driving on a second design tranny from Acura. As far as an tranny cooler, I've seen it on Honda 4chls but never our cars. Maybe someone else will post up with a little more experience with them

None the less, welcome to the site!! Lots of things to learn here

our megamoderator fsttyms1 (fast times won) has been thru 5 a/t rebuilds on his 00
3 of them ran an oil cooler and had the lowest miles before failure!!

the recall was to install an external jet kit to bring atf directly to the 2nd gear set
If your trans has a large bolt on top marked ATF--the filler hole-
its the updated-known as post feb 2005 case design change
(if strange device and small oil ine = original design)

if acura ever replaced the trans under warranty,,and it was 05 or later = it got the new case,,,
blue paint was applied to several bolt heads on trans to indicate its a warranty unit

that change moved the external kit internal and improved some flow passages
It has better life than originals but still prone to certain weakness

our main prob is 3rd gear clutchpack gets little cooling
dont do max rpm downshifts into 3rd or 2nd to avoid heat
its a touring car~

best thing to do is run the new honda DW-1 atf fluid,,
change it all out now with 5000 miles,,there will have been the most metal to metal wear of parts getting mated by now- get it out

Then yearly change half the fluid with a one drain and refill of 3.4 qts,,,
wont hurt to change all of it if you have the budget

if your year has the replaceable external filter $25- do that too
see our diy section ,,third item down the main gen2 thread title list
welcome to azine!

register with acura 1 800 382 2238 x5 gets a human,
tell them new owner -give your address info and ask if all recalls are taken care of
there is a recent one for airbag inflator--all ziners should be registered--that place mails out recall cards
also at www.owners.acura.com where you can store the radio security caode and download a free owner manual,
need cars VIN handy to register at both,,and both are free
