Preemptive tranny work

is there anything that can be done to fix the tranny before it blows. if the specific problem is known (i believe i remember reading that it was a defective 3rd gear pak or something?) then can that particular part be replaced/fixed?

i bought my car w/ a salvaged title (no warranty), so if their is any way to fix the problem before it happens, it would be worth it to me.

questin 2. -what is the cost of a replacement tranny if i were to pay for it myself? would i have to buy new or could i buy rebuilt?

i remember reading about some people (austin519 is one) who have modified/ reinforced their tranny's. would this be effective in minimizing chances of blowing. and approx how much?

obviously i am quite worried about this. any info or insight would be greatly appreciated.

there is nothing you can do before hand other than having it rebuilt, by a reputable shop.

The best thing you can do other than re-building your tranny..which goes well over $3k in parts+labor, get yourself a tranny cooler.

A tranny cooler won't help. The problems are inadequet oil flow inside the tranny and out-of-spec 3rd gear clutch plate. The rebuild tranny has numerous oil passages enlarged and the oil flow rate increased. So the cooler will probably help cooling the outside part of the tranny, but deep inside, the failing clutch parts are still overheating because of oil starvation.
Re-building the tranny does help too, because some rebuilt trannies are also known to fail the same. I guess we just have to sit on the extended warranty and wait, until the tranny fails.

Having a tranny cooler is better than not having one, correct?

The tranny is still gonna fail with the cooler because of internal overheating. The cooler may have extended the time to failure by a couple of weeks or months, or worst still, after the 7yr/100K extended warranty expired. But hey, why spent your own money when the factory will replace everything for free.
