power steering pump noise

Hi guys,

Well, I changed my timming belt/wpump (7 hrs !!!!), with ps/ac new belts. Problem, my power steering unit is making noise, only when i rev the engine, nothing at idle. Now, I drove my car arround town for 10 miles w/o any noise after the tblet, but now on to work today 70 mile round trip hway, I can hear it whine. No feed back from steering. Now, when I did the tbelt, i disconnected the pump, fluid fell out, a little, but limits in resiovor are normal. Did I put air in it, do i need to bleed this? I tensioned the bolt to the exact height off original (1").

Any help you guys

Thanks,
Jason

It may not be tensioned properly. You dont go off the bolt. There is a tension to the belt that needs to be set. If you over tighten it, you may ruin the pump (easy to do on these cars) You may be to tight (as the new belt isnt as stretched as the old)

I had the whine noise on mines, then it stopped after I did the timing belt kit replacement and now the noise is back and my power steering fluid leaks. What should I do to correct that cuz I dont want to keep filing it up to stop the noise??

Find the leak. We cant help you with that. You have to look for it and tell us where its coming from.

check the ps pump to hose connections
Then look under the car at the connection of hose to steering rack- then the steering rack itself

Kris: That racks got rubber boots on the end doesnt it? your rack had a leak iirc??
if so:
You can pull an edge back from the boot and if fluid leaks out....seals inside rack bad

This article is from Acrua Service News dated Feb 2001:

Growling P/S Pumps and
Frothy Reservoirs
Any vehicle with a growling P/S pump or a frothy
reservoir probably has a pinhole leak between the
reservoir and the suction side of the P/S pump.
When air is sucked into the system, it mixes with
the fluid and creates the growl or froth. Since the
leak lets air in, but fluid doesn’t leak out,
diagnosing this problem hasn’t been easy, until
now. Do this:
1. Warm the engine to normal operating
temperature.
2. Adapt a hand pump to fit into the reservoir
opening. (Mighty-Vac pumps come with
adapters to do this.)
3. With the engine at idle, connect the hand
pump, and pressurize the reservoir a little (not
over 8 psi).
4. Look for a leak in the suction hose or at the
P/S pump shaft seal, and repair the system as
needed.
