I currently own an 03 TL-S that I bought a year ago used. The cold truth is that the tranny is likely to fail or show symptoms of failure at some point in the future. Surprisingly, this isn't all bad news. The new trannies are much smoother shifting than the originals. The original tranny in my car was replaced in November by my dealer before it failed, and I only wish it had been replaced sooner (because of the improvements). You're covered til 100K. I love the car and knew the potential tranny problems before I bought it. My advice is to buy the car and expect to need to have the tranny replaced at some point. Usually the car will show some symptoms of tranny failure before a complete failure occurs. Also, establish a relationship with an Acura dealer in your area - it can't hurt.

I bought a 02 TL one year ago. I have no regrets about it. The dealer I am going through has been very good to me so far. Parts are expensive for these cars, but to me it's worth it.
I like the bodystyle of the 02-03 so much that if my tranny failed and for some reason I wouldn't end up with a free new one (mileage, etc.) I would probably buy a new tranny myself and still keep the car.
Keep in mind buying a TL that is ACURA Certified (and buying extended warranties, such as high tech or powertrain) from an acura dealer is a much better idea for this car than buying one from a diff. dealership. (I've seen them out there recently). You'll be treated so much better.
This website is a great support, too. There's good advice and help if you plan on ever fixing stuff yourself. DIY's for everything from whole component swaps to simple stuff like "my seat belt won't roll up anymore", "How to get bugs off windshield". Peep here are helpful.
Good luck, whatever car you choose.

Yes do it! I have a Silver 2002 TL-S and I love her!!! I have had it for about a year and she has about 72k miles on it and seems to be running ok. Don't know if the previous owner already had the tranny replaced but as far as I can tell it is running well. I love this car and call me a dumb ass but knowing about the tranny problems I would get it again. I kind of don't like the look of the new Acuras. They looks smaller to me somehow kind of squished. Don't get me wrong I would drive one of those too . How much were you looking at? I paid around 22 for mine if I remember correctly. And as others have said 34k is not many miles and you can get tranny replaced up to 100k.

Go for it. I have a 2002 TL-S. I bought new. Now 96,000 KM. Car works great. My only complaint is.... I find the car does not preform as well on fast starts. It seems to laggggg...rpm stays low between gears. I was told to cancel the CPU and have the car learn the gears again!
I will sell in the spring. Four years was way too much!
