Pinging sound in engine 100-2000 rpms
I have a pinging sound coming from my engine from 1000-2000 rpms. It is a metallic pinging sound. It happens when I am accelerating from a stop, or am in third gear at a low speed and I accelerate. Some of you might have heard this sound in old cars or taxis. Should I be worried about it?
Also, I have noticed that there is not much acceleration in that area. maybe its always been like this, maybe not.
Thanks for your help,
Roshan Patel

Is it loud or very subtle? I got something in the 2000-3000 range again in acceleration or on an incline (most noticeable in 4th), it's not very loud and I couldnt demonstrate it to the service guy very well. But he left it at the possibility that it was a ping and didnt bother to do anything about it. punk. and yeah i use 92 octane. i guess i'm goin to some other place to get it serviced.

The sound is very subtle. I can only hear it with the windows open. It doesn't make the sound when the car is in park and i rev it to that range. Just when I am driving. I use 93 octane. I tried different companies and stations but its still there

well, this was more of a metallic rattling sound. It was driving me crazy one day and I couldnt' figure out what the hell it was for the life of me.
Then I picked up my can of diet Coke from my cupholder and the noise went away suddenly. Turns out the soda can was sort of resonating in the cupholder as I drove making a very weird metallic rattling sound.
So it's definitely not a "ping", but just check out what's right under your nose before you start taking things apart
:p

yeah mine doesnt do it in park or neutral either. I cant really hear it with the windows down cuz 2000 rpms in 4th gear is a bit too fast to hear anything over the wind noise. but with the windows up and no AC goin I can hear it. The service guy did hear it barely and said it could be a ping and the knock sensors compensate for it anyways. of course this answer doesnt satisfy me considering its a brand new TLS. Lazy punks.

I get some valve chatter, nice octane regulation in Oregon...NOT...., but that's not really a metallic sound.
I run premium fuel too...
Anyone tried the octane boost's yet?

Oh yeah, people have mentioned that it could be a loose heat shield or something. Have that checked out too. Although I'd expect to hear something in park and neutral if this was the case, but I dont know.

bh - Your Acura dealer may be entirely correct. The quality of gas varies between states due to EPA/ARB regulations, and also between stations due to volume (how quickly the supply in the underground tanks is turned over). There is nothing your dealer can do to compensate for poor fuel quality and it's ability to resist detonation.
The good news is that your engine is protected by a knock sensor that sends a signal to the ECU to retard the timing if detonation is sensed. The bad news is that performance will diminish as the timing is retarded.
Where do you purchase your fuel? Have you tried different stations or brands? Do you have any engine modifications? I have experienced detonation, but it wasn't until I made modifications to the induction system.
