Painted Y-pipe question

I am noticing that the paint I am using isn't sticking very well to the pipe. I am using 500 deg semi gloss paint and after about a month or so it begins to fade. Any ideas if going with 1500 deg paint will help or do i need to prime it?

Thanks

-Rich

I used 1500 degree flat black paint about 6 months ago. I have no peeling at all. Fade? It's flat black, so hard to tell.

Prep wise, I scuffed the area with 150 grit sandpaper and used lacquer thinner to clean it. Then I painted. No primer.

So far, so good.
