P1740 error and Clutch Pressure Switches Part Numbers

Hi, Hope someone out there can help....
I have an '02 TL-S (140K miles and second trannie replaced at 40K) with a P1740 trouble code. (Otherwise runs ok, and no other error codes.) After reading as much as I can, I found out that this is a "fourth pressure switch malfunction", and can be caused by dirty fluid, bad #3 or #4 Clutch Plate Pressure Switch, or the trannie is wearing excessivly and will soon fail. I'd like to know if it is on the edge as I am planning a long trip.

Here is my plan of attack... Change out both pressure switches, flush and replace the fluid with DW1 using the 3x3 method and resetting the error code. Then see if the error returns.

Problem, I cannot find the part number for the #3 and #4 pressure switches. (I think they are different.) Can anyone help? Also do I need any sealing gaskets? Please chime in and tell me what you think of my "plan of attack". Thanks

Your transmission is probably dying. Changing fluid and pressure switches might prolong the inevitable, but start planning for the tranny to fail. Very small percentage of those codes are actually a problem with only the pressure switch.

40k on factory installed original tranny.
+100k on replacement tranny.
=140k......? you beat the original by quite a bit, so here you go again !

But it never hurts to have the tranny professionally checked, if in doubt.

second trannie replaced at 40K
You are on yur third transmission?

Here's what to do:

Start changing your ATF fluid regularly. A D/F every 10K, or 3x3 every 30k, or whatever.

Remove the 4th gear switch, clean the heck out of it with brake cleaner, and reinstall it.
Reset the codes. See if they come back.

One year and three days ago, 20,000 miles ago, I removed and cleaned mine. Error code never came back.

Post #9, second pic, shows location of switch. You've got to remove your front driver's tire. USE A JACK STAND.

Can't miss it. No, you do not put anything on the seal ring. I might have put something on the threads.

I recently had mine rebuilt. The guy cleaned the hell out of all the switches, and the 4th gear pressure switch died a day after getting car back. went back in & he replaced em (it's very common) & still good to this day. cheap part & easy to replace for most
