I am going to wait before I purchase something called the "mystery mod". I want to see what results other members on this board get (dynos would be good) before I pop down $300 dollars on anything. If the claims turn out to be true then I'll be ready to buy the thing. All I can say for now is I hope its as good as they say it is.

It's only called a mystery mod b/c we don't know what it is. Rick Case Acura is the one doing the R&D on it, and it's a real product, just like their 3.5L upgrade was......

i read about chips not being able to go in our tls?!?!....
and plus... if u chip a car...does that mean its pushing the engine above its limits?!... thats what i think about chips... what exactly do they do to improve performance? someone help me on this cuz i dont kno much about it...

Why its not a "chip" or computer upgrade
Our PCM is not writeable... and if it were it would require a new flash being burned into our chip which would not be possible with out the equipment (Flash Rom Burner ~$2500). Unless it was an entire ECU replacement which is more then a $300 item and it would void the warranty. If it is a software upgrade it would have to be a piggy back computer unit similar to the Apex-i VAFC/SAFC controller and would need timing manipulation to be effective since the air-fuel mixture modification only yields max 3-4 HP peak horsepower as its been proven many times already. Plus it is unlikely becuase the numbers and dyno's hes posted show less improvement with the more mods you have... if it were I would expect a more linear increase.
What it might be given the facts known
FACTS:
1) Costs $300
2) "Brainless" install has been mentioned by Doug requiring no special tools.
3) Takes a few minutes to install ~5mins.
4) More mods yiels less gains with the "Mystery Mod" (Greatest gains on stock cars)
Guesses:
Since the only $300 retail AND the mods it was tested with were stock and Comptech Headers, CAI, Exhuast and 3.5L Upgrade.... And all but the 3.5L upgrade basically helped engine respiration... then I would "guess" it has to do with an improvement in intake or exhaust. I say this becuase the more respiration mods you have (intake .. headers.. exhaust) the less the gains it makes.
The $300 retail price really limits the range of things it may be .. or more accurately eliminates many guesses because at $299 retail it would be a safe bet to say its about ~$150-$175 to produce.
AND he said it can be used in conjunction with existing mods mentioned above...
Price and installation time would rule out some obvious guesses like:
New Heads - or ported/polished heads
Cat back exhuast
New exhuast manifolds or short headers
PCM replacement / Computer Upgrade / "Chip"
CAM gear upgrade ( grey area though price is right .. time of installation isn't)
Possible but not probable
New throttle body
- Price gets tight and time to install is tight..
+ Consistent with results on modded engines (Type S already has a 64mm throttle body .. dont quote me on that though)
Pulleys
- Time to install is much longer and need a puller to remove pulles
+ Price matches pretty close
Upgraded Ignition System
- We already have a coil on each cylinder .. tough to improve and gains wouldnt be that high
Intake manifold (IMRC Upgrade)
- Time of installation and price
+ Gains would match results shown..greater with less mods
Possible given the information he gave wasnt to keep us busy guessing during production LOL
New Catalytic Converter
+ Increased back pressure generating more torque w/proper design would also give some HP - Works with the results given for mods vs no mods
+ Really only takes 10 minutes to replace and a 12mm? wrench
+ Price is about right
- Not a super easy install as had been mentioned
Induction extension or modification
+ "Could" increase HP and Torque as shown
+ "Could" work with mods shown
- Tough to get gains unless its directs uniform air flow with constant velocity at filter or induction path.
Throttle Body Extension Plate/Gasket
(Plate that increases the distance between IMRC and Throttle Body)
+ Ideas been around for years on domestics
+ Gains would be consistent w/mods vs no mods
+ Price is about right
+ Quick installation and no special tools
Cooling Unit/Intercooler like device
+ Price matches
+ Gains would be consistent to those shown
+ Possibly easy to install
- Gains w/mods vs no mods doesnt match really well
Just some of my guesses to throw into the mix.......
KEEP IN MIND I AM ASUMING THINGS POSTED BY DOUG & FRIENDS is ACCURATE to the dollar amounts and to the ease/time of installation.
