Here's a new one I have not seen posted or discussed.

2) Store your oil upside down

Sound nuts - can't be related in any way? Read on.

Remember that 10-20% of oil is the additive package. A % of that is extreme friction protectors, anti-wear additives, etc. These are suspended metals/salts (usually dithiophosphates)- making engine oil a colloid.

Over time, the partciles will succumb to gravity and settle at the bottom of the bottle. So back to #2, if you buy by the case, store your case upside down to ensure that all the additive suspensions get into your engine so they can do their stuff.

Now, back to #1. The 55 gallon drums used by most dealers are subject to the same issue. Generally, for a high volume dealer or oil change shop, they turnover the bulk oil at a rate that precludes serious settling. But you have no way of knowing how long the drums have been sitting before they get to the dealer. What if they are approaching the end of their normal service life, or even worse, they are outdated and have been replaced by new formulations?

Plus, dealers often are shut down for two days a week.

Think about it.

Another reason I roll my own.
