Question Not Indiglo, but electro-luminescent

Has anyone ever seen an aftermarket gauge cluster
that was like the big dog cadillacs and the Lexus.
That black 3-d looking electro-luminescent gauges,
that are completely black when off. But lit up like
las vegas when powered? These seem a lot
different than the Indiglo, altough I assume indiglo
is actually a electro-lum display as well. Those in
the Caddies and Lexus look totally different than
our indiglos.

They run all the time, day or nite. If you know what
I mean.

Here is a picture if you don't..

http://www.cadillac.com/cadillacjsp/...strument+panel

It must be hard to do otherwise we would see kits?

I noticed these on the lexus..and it's tight! I don't understand exactly how it's done. I think it would cost too much money and time just to do it.

Yeah, those gauge lights are cool. I don't know what they use, but I'd guess that it's cold cathode or electroluminescent. Too bad we can't get that.

That looks like it's vacuum-fluorescent, like the display on your VCR.

Are they something like these?
http://www.sejin.com/product/product_vfd.html

By the way, MB uses white LEDs and a light blue filter behind their instrument cluster to get that icy blue color.

Could be, but it looks a hella lot better than your vcr! It's super bright, and the colors are much more vibrant. Plus the needles actually move, rather than just light up different filaments. I've seen vcr looking displays on cars before, like the old vette, and some late 80's and early 90's cars. This looks nothing like that.

What's that DTR stands for?? Is it for the special cruise control that mercedez has it? (automatically reduces speed when approching certain distance with the car)

Or it might be...

Distronic

The Distronic Adaptive Cruise Control is the world's first adaptive cruise control. A radar sensor in the grille can pinpoint the location of a moving car ahead of you. Distronic can automatically adjust the throttle - and even apply up to 20% of the car's braking power - to help you maintain the following distance you have selected.

The needles move because... well, they're real needles. They're plastic needles lit at the base with a white LED. The only vacuum fluorescent parts of MB's instrument cluster are the alphanumeric / icon displays. The gauges are conventional, i.e. backlit plastic.

Just ordered a bunch of white LEDs (120 deg.) and ultra red LEDs (160 deg.) from LEDtronics. There are seven push and twisted type 74 blubs (part # 35505-SJ4-004, 14 V, 3W) that lit up behind the guages. I just bought one of these blulbs ( comes with socket assy. $1.12) from Acura dealer to see if I can mount LED with a resistor onto the socket. I was able to pull the blub out of the socket and put a LED and 500 ohms resistor in the socket. I tested on the bench and it work off a 14V power supply. I am going back to Acura dealer to buy more 74 bulb socket assy. and waiting for the LEDs to come in.

A 470 ohm resistor or thereabouts would be fine (gives you a current draw of about 21 mA).

They are on the New I30, the newer Mazda Millenias, the newer continentals... etc..

very nice, they are black the light is then projected somehow to form the gauges....

BTW i still don't think these are bad looking cars, 275HP V8's (they are heavy tho... but one of the more reliable fords, i actually considered one...)

cuz i like big cars, ne how...
lol

all in all i love those gauges
