Exclamation Noise Heard on Brand New 03 S-Type

I just bought my 03 TL S-Type about 5 days ago. Every since day one, I have heard a noise coming from what sounds like the transmission but I'm not sure.

I hear the noise after I have put the car into gear(D5) and start to move. Then I hear it again about 5 seconds later. It happens every time at the same time which leads me to believe that it is normal. I don't hear the noise again after hearing it twice shortly after putting it into gear.

The only way I can describe the noise is something similar to an air compressor that lasts for about 1 second and then cuts off. It is not very loud and if the radio is on you will almost definitely not hear it. I'm thinking it is something to do with the Type-S because a co-worker has a 02 model that does the same thing.

I'm having it checked out right now and they gave me another new TL(still has the sticker on it) but it is not an S-Type. I do not hear the noise on that car.

Anybody else hear the same noise?

Don't worry, that sounds like your ABS system checking in. It should only happen after you have switched into D5 when you 1st start the car. It's almost like a muffled buzz sound.

That is exactly what it sounds like. I never thought about it being the ABS. That makes total sense. Thanks.

Right on the money. That makes me feel a lot better...but why doesn't it do this on the standard TL?

Not to be a smartass here, but unless you're driving a Jaguar ... you don't have an S-Type.

The anti-lock brakes should make noise on all Honda/Acura models with anti-lock brakes. It may not be as noticeable on other cars because they have smaller wheels and hence smaller brakes, but it should still do the anti-lock brake test everytime you start driving the car.

Makes sense and I agree. Looks like I messed up on the description. I meant Type S.

ABS self-check at 5 mph, and VSC self-check at 15 mph.

It's completely normal.
