What do you mean by hard to shift? Physically or electronically? If what you mean is it is hard for you to move the shifter forward and backward, it is probably just some dried up coke. Take the center console out and then start cleaning. If it is electronically, take it back to the dealer.

Humm...I know how to get there. Is just sticky from the coke. I had to do this because my ex-girlfriend spill a full cup of coffe in the same place. I could explain better if I had pictures. Take the platic around the metal(plastic) shifter. It just pops up.....you could do it with your finder or a screw driver. Then pop the metal shifter whith a screw driver. There is a plastic cover that you will need to turn the car on and shift to take it out and to put it back in. Leave in park to take out the bottom part then shif to D1 to take out the other part. Once that is out.....just clean it and you should be fine. Hope this helps

Yeah, had my 2001 not been the new and improved cupholders that would have been a mandate when I got the car... the 2001's are lightyears better than the older ones...

The reason why your shifter is hard to move is that the sticky Coke got on the shaft that connects the shift knob to the transmission. Once you take it apart (follow Bitium's directions), shift all the way down into 1<>2. There's a shaft connected to the lever that goes through a hole towards the front of the car. Clean it up and you'll be back to normal.
