And out of it again whenever you like. Also it's ok to do things like shift at full throttle-the computer will not let you hurt the transmission. Acura transmissions insist on self-destructing entirely on their own.

I ve got a question. Lets say i was at a stop sign and a tough looking car pulls up and wants to race. Would I be faster if i used the sportshift mode or just auto??? I really dont know.. should i practice?? Does one have to master the sportshift for ultimate use??? I have a tl (not s type) I also put an AEM short intake on it.

From driving on the track I have seen that automatic is better in about 3rd gear for the 99s or probably 4th gear for the newer TLs...But at the same time I believe coming out of the corners with the option of 2nd gear then to 3rd was faster...

Just try it out...

The more in control you can be, the better... That is if you are good at being in control, of course.

if your not experienced, just floor the car while not in sport shift

yeah, if you've done aftermarket mods, like headers, then it benefits to use the sport shift to get the most use out of the headers, since the computer will shift a pinch early. I found that at the track i pulled better times by using sequential rather than leaving it up to the computer, which would shift me out at around 6,100 rpms...whereas in sequential I can hold the gears out to 6500-6600 for more top end power. (this power was not seen before I got the headers). Oh, by the way, I have a '99 TL.

However, if your not experienced or are virtually stock, then the regular automatic mode does a fine job.

Of course I do not condone street racing, however, the best thing is to put it in the sportshift and then not shift it. It will hold to redline in second. This seems faster than leaving it in D5 and stomping it.

wait ur sayin that if I put in SS mode and floor it, it will automatically shift to 2nd at the very last second? I know the car automatically shifts to 2nd in SS mode, but I thought it hesitated and wasn't good for the trans to push it...

In my manual, it suggests shifting to D3 or D4 when going down a steep hill rather than riding the brakes the whole way down the hill if you want to control your speed. I don't think they expect you to come to a complete stop, then change to D3/D4 then continue down the hill, then stop again at the bottom to go to D5.

My understanding is that the shifter doesn't have any sort of mechanical connection to anything, it's just a switch/control that goes to a computer. The computer then gets the final say to what gear you end up in. Because of this, you can't shift incorrectly. ...or am I incorrect in thinking this?

No, it will shift from first a little early but for stoplight races 2nd is your running gear and it will hold to redline.

You're talking about how you have no control over 1st gear in SS mode right?

For 2000+ TL, yes, you have no control over 1st gear. The computer will shift to 2nd gear way to early. That's why the '99 TL's are great as we have full control over 1st gear (we can shift to 2nd gear at the redline if we want to).
