Newbie aboard.....

I discovered this forum only yesterday. What a great resource!
I've had my Type-S since July 2001. My wife got hers February 2002. Having driven my Type-S, 'she who must be obeyed' wasn't really interested in comparison shopping.

We love our cars. Neither of us is likely to apply significant modifications to our vehicles.

We're both displaced Brits, having moved to San Diego, CA from the UK in 1987. For some reason, Acura has no presence in the UK. Anyone know why Honda decided to bybass this market?

I've already read many threads here, and I've learned a lot from other people's experiences. I doubt whether I'll ever be able to contribute very much, but I'll be a heavy 'lurker'.

Thanks to all for creating a great Type-S resource,
Steve.

Welcome to the forum. I'm a lurker too. I agree there is lots of good info here.

I've talked to a few Brits and I've gotten the impression that Honda products are different in Europe. In general because of several factors (type of roads, types of driver (European drivers are better trained and more knowledgable about car handling than average American drivers)) the average UK Honda is more technically sophisticated and handles better than the average American Honda. Since these were the primary selling points for Acura here there does not seem to be a good reason for Acura in the UK. Also: 1) I think Honda UK only sells Japanese or locally built cars. 2) It might be because their sales base wasn't that large at the time) 3) Some of the Acura models are available in the UK but are labeled Honda not Acura (The NSX and the RL (stilled called the Legend there) are two examples)

I certainly agree about the driving abilities of typical british drivers vs. typical US drivers. I think a lot has to do with the way cars are built. European cars tend to be smaller, with firmer suspension, and predominently stick-shift. I couldn't believe how 'soft' US cars rode when I first landed stateside. I'd hit a bump in the road, and the car would undulate up and down for what seemed a lifetime.

European 'equivalents' tend to be more powerful than their US counterparts too. I remember the Ford Escort RS being a high-performance car in the UK.

Another (more recent) example, is the Honda Civic. everyone in the US is excited about the SI (150 hp) being re-introduced. The british 'equivalent' will be a 200 hp machine.

The last time I was back in the UK (1997) I was surprised how many US vehicles were on the roads. Minivans and Jeep Cherokees / Grand Cherokees were everywhere. I remember seeing other models too. I know that I for one would be drooling for a TL Type-S if I still lived on the other side of the pond.

BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes sell well in the UK. Acura would too.

Just my 2c's worth
