I have just baught a 2000 Tl. I have not recieved the manual for the vehicle yet. I am not sure about the gear indication light in red by the lever indicator light in green. why does the red #'s show only in the 4/5 position to the left? and the car will not shift out of 2nd when on the D5 on the left sid above the D4?

I'm not really sure what it is that you are describing, could you make it more clear?

When the car is in D5, you can either have the shifter to the right or the left. When the shifter is to the left, the car will not shift out of 2nd gear. It seems that the only time the orange idiot light that tells you what gear you're in only comes on when the shifter is in the left position in D5 and D4. Why is this? Shouldn't the idiot lights come on in any position the gear shifter is in?

Ok, now I understand! When the shifter is to the left, the car is in Sport Shift (SS) mode. This allows you to shift gears manually. That is why the car will not shift out of second gear is because you need to manually upshift by pressing the shifter upwards once. Then the light will display 3rd gear. The lights only come on when the car is in SS mode, because otherwise the car is in D5 auto. Hope this helps.
